Alexis Mac Allister says his future at Liverpool is uncertain after the club told him last season it did not plan to offer him a new contract, at least for the time being.
The Argentina international, whose current deal runs until June 2028, said the decision had been painful. But changes at Anfield since then have left him open-minded about what might happen next.
“The reality is that the manager has changed, the sporting director has changed, and new investors are coming into the club,” Mac Allister told Argentine journalist Gastón Edul. “So I think today I am in a position where anything can happen.”
The 27-year-old added that he wants to continue at Liverpool and is happy at the club. His comments do not amount to a transfer request, but they leave the door open to a change in the club’s stance on a new deal.
Mac Allister says contract decision was painful
Liverpool’s reported decision not to begin renewal talks came after midfielders Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai signed long-term contracts.
Mac Allister said he had been told the club did not intend to renew his contract “at least for now”. He acknowledged that the news was difficult to hear, while noting that he still had time left on his current deal.
“It was obviously a painful situation,” he said. “I still had time, or still have time left at this club, which is what I want most: to continue here.”
The midfielder has previously said he considered leaving after receiving the news. He has now pointed to the changes in Liverpool’s leadership and ownership as reasons why the situation could develop differently.

New leadership and investment could change the picture
Andoni Iraola replaced Arne Slot as Liverpool head coach, while Julian Ward succeeded Richard Hughes as sporting director. A consortium led by Amit Bhatia has also agreed to buy a 38 per cent stake in the club from Fenway Sports Group.
Mac Allister said those changes mean the circumstances around his future are no longer the same as when he was first told a renewal was not planned. He also stressed that he holds no grudge over the previous decision.
His performances have improved under Iraola. Mac Allister has scored four goals in all competitions this season, one fewer than his total across the whole of the 2025-26 campaign.
The midfielder’s form, his contract length and Liverpool’s new leadership will all shape what happens next. For now, he says he is happy at Anfield and wants to stay, while accepting that “anything can happen”.
