Liverpool have entered the race for one of the brightest young talents at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with reports claiming the Reds are challenging Arsenal for the signature of Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi.
The 18-year-old Morocco international has emerged as one of the tournament’s breakout stars after an impressive display in his country’s 1-1 draw against Brazil, attracting attention from some of Europe’s biggest clubs. Arsenal were initially considered frontrunners for the teenager, but Liverpool have now made their move.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed that both Premier League giants have held direct talks with Bouaddi’s representatives as the battle for his signature intensifies. Liverpool’s interest comes as new head coach Andoni Iraola continues shaping his plans for a squad rebuild at Anfield.
“There were direct contacts with Arsenal and direct contacts also with Liverpool,” Romano said, adding that both clubs have met with the player’s agents.
Liverpool are not alone in the chase. Paris Saint-Germain are long-term admirers of Bouaddi, while Chelsea have also been linked with the midfielder following his rapid rise in France and on the international stage.
Bouaddi only signed a new contract with Lille in December, tying him to the French club until 2029. However, Romano suggested the extension was partly designed to protect Lille’s negotiating position ahead of an expected scramble for the youngster’s services.
The midfielder’s value has soared in recent months. Arsenal are believed to have held discussions over a potential deal worth around £60 million, although Lille are under no pressure to sell one of their most prized assets.
Despite the growing speculation, Bouaddi has insisted his focus remains firmly on Morocco’s World Cup campaign.
Speaking about transfer interest, the teenager said he is pleased to know leading clubs are monitoring him but is concentrating solely on helping Morocco progress in the tournament.
For Liverpool, Bouaddi fits the profile of the young, technically gifted players the club is targeting under Iraola. The teenager made 42 appearances for Lille last season and helped the French side secure Champions League qualification, while his mature performances have already drawn comparisons with some of Europe’s elite midfield talents.
As things stand, Arsenal are understood to be further advanced in discussions, but with no agreement yet in place, Liverpool remain firmly in contention to hijack the deal and bring one of world football’s most exciting prospects to Anfield.
