West Ham United have stepped up their interest in Reiss Nelson, with the Hammers exploring the conditions of a loan deal for the Arsenal winger.
The 26-year-old has returned to Arsenal following a season-long spell at Brentford but could be on the move again before the summer transfer window closes. West Ham have been monitoring his situation and are now assessing whether an agreement can be reached with the Premier League champions.
Nelson was an unused substitute during Arsenal’s pre-season fixture against Borussia Dortmund, adding to uncertainty over how prominently he features in Mikel Arteta’s plans for the new campaign.
His contract situation could prove significant in negotiations. Nelson has entered the final guaranteed year of his Arsenal deal, although reports indicate the Gunners retain an option to extend it for another season.
That could complicate West Ham’s preference for another temporary move. Arsenal may decide a permanent transfer makes more sense rather than sanctioning another loan for a player approaching the end of his guaranteed contract.
Nelson came through Arsenal’s academy and made his senior debut in 2017. Despite being regarded as one of the club’s brightest prospects during his development, he has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter.
Loan spells have subsequently taken him to Hoffenheim, Feyenoord, Fulham and most recently Brentford.
His latest spell away from the Emirates produced 14 appearances for Brentford, with Nelson scoring in a 5-0 Carabao Cup victory over Grimsby Town. Brentford confirmed his return to Arsenal at the end of the campaign.
West Ham’s interest is not new. Reports last month indicated the east London club were already considering Nelson, who is believed to favour remaining in the capital while seeking more consistent first-team football.
His ability to operate on either wing would provide West Ham with another attacking option as they continue reshaping their squad this summer.
For Arsenal, Nelson is among several players whose futures remain unresolved as Arteta’s side continue making changes following their Premier League title-winning campaign.
The discussions remain at an exploratory stage, but West Ham’s interest could now provide Nelson with another route away from the Emirates and the opportunity for more regular football.
