Joshua Zirkzee is reportedly open to leaving Manchester United for Napoli during the January transfer window as his struggle for regular football at Old Trafford continues.

Italian reports claim Napoli have made initial contact with United to explore a deal for the Netherlands international.

United are said to be willing to consider either a permanent transfer worth around €30million–€35m (£26m–£30m) or a loan agreement.

However, no formal offer or agreement between the clubs has been confirmed.

Napoli step up Zirkzee interest

Napoli sporting director Giovanni Manna has identified Zirkzee as a potential attacking reinforcement ahead of the winter window.

The Italian champions reportedly want another forward to support former United striker Rasmus Hojlund, with Lorenzo Lucca struggling to establish himself.

Zirkzee is familiar with Serie A after previously playing for Parma and Bologna. His performances for Bologna earned him a place in the league’s Team of the Year before United signed him in 2024.

According to Area Napoli, the 25-year-old has indicated he would welcome a possible return to Italian football.

Napoli could face competition from Juventus, although the Turin club may need to create room in their squad before pursuing another striker.

Hojlund and McTominay could assist Napoli

Former United players Hojlund and Scott McTominay have been described as two potential allies in Napoli’s pursuit.

The original Italian report says the pair could recommend life at Napoli to their former team-mate. It does not confirm that either player has already spoken to Zirkzee or persuaded him to make the move.

Both players have enjoyed greater success in Italy after leaving Old Trafford, which could make Napoli an attractive destination for the Dutch forward.

Hojlund would also give Zirkzee a familiar face within the attacking department, while McTominay has become an important member of the Napoli squad.

United prepared to consider January exit

Zirkzee joined United from Bologna for a reported €42.5m in July 2024, signing a five-year contract with the option of an additional season.

His time in Manchester has proved difficult, with the forward struggling to secure a consistent starting role or deliver regularly in front of goal.

United were reportedly prepared to let him leave during the summer, but a potential departure failed to materialise.

His situation has not improved significantly under Michael Carrick, increasing speculation that both the player and club could view a January transfer as the best solution.

Selling Zirkzee would give United extra funds and space in the squad to pursue another forward. Carrick is reportedly keen to strengthen his attacking options because of Benjamin Sesko’s recurring injury problems.

But while Napoli’s interest appears genuine, the suggestion that Zirkzee has approved the move should still be treated cautiously. The existing reports indicate that he is receptive to returning to Serie A rather than confirming a complete agreement with Napoli.
