Bayern Munich president Herbert Hainer has ruled out a move for Florian Wirtz despite admitting that he feels sympathy for the Liverpool playmaker.

Wirtz joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2025 in a deal worth up to £116million after rejecting interest from Bayern.

The Germany international arrived at Anfield with a reputation as one of Europe’s most creative young players, but he has struggled to reproduce his best Leverkusen form consistently in the Premier League.

His difficulties have prompted speculation that Bayern could offer him a route back to Germany. However, Hainer insists the Bundesliga champions are satisfied with their current squad.

“Florian Wirtz is an outstanding player; there’s absolutely no question about that,” Hainer said.

The Bayern president added that he felt “a little sorry” for Wirtz because he had not yet reached the level in England that he previously showed in Germany.

However, when asked about signing the 23-year-old, Hainer said Bayern already have a top-quality squad and that a move is “not an issue for us” at present.

Liverpool remain behind Wirtz

Despite the criticism surrounding his performances, Liverpool have given no public indication that they are considering selling Wirtz.

Reds manager Andoni Iraola recently declared that he had “100 per cent” confidence in both Wirtz and Bradley Barcola, another expensive signing who has faced scrutiny.

Wirtz also produced an encouraging response during Liverpool’s 2-1 comeback victory over Brentford on Saturday.

The midfielder created nine chances and supplied the assist for Victor Muñoz’s equaliser before Alexander Isak scored the winner against a Brentford side that finished with nine men.

His performance offered evidence that he can still become an influential player at Anfield, even if he has yet to justify fully the enormous transfer fee Liverpool paid for him.

Scholes questions Wirtz’s Premier League suitability

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes believes Wirtz’s technical qualities could make him better suited to Spanish football.

Scholes said the German is “made for Spain” but questioned how much longer Liverpool should wait for him to produce his best form consistently.

Nicky Butt compared Wirtz’s situation to that of former United midfielder Juan Sebastián Verón, who arrived in England with a huge reputation but struggled to adapt to the Premier League.

Butt suggested Wirtz could return to Germany and become a leading player again if his spell at Liverpool does not work out.

For now, however, Bayern are distancing themselves from a possible transfer, while Liverpool continue to back their record signing.

Wirtz’s display against Brentford may prove an important step as he attempts to silence the criticism and establish himself as a central figure in Iraola’s team.
