Real Madrid have completed the signing of Ibrahima Konate on a free transfer after the French defender’s contract with Liverpool expired, ending months of speculation over his future.
The 27-year-old centre-back has signed a contract running until June 2030 and becomes the latest addition to a Real Madrid squad undergoing a major rebuild under returning manager Jose Mourinho.
Konate joins a growing list of new arrivals at the Santiago Bernabeu, following the signings of Marc Cucurella and Bernardo Silva, while Madrid are also expected to complete a deal for Inter Milan right-back Denzel Dumfries in the coming weeks.
The move reunites Konate with former Liverpool teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold, who made the controversial switch from Anfield to Madrid a year earlier.
Madrid’s pursuit of Konate had been no secret. The Spanish giants first explored a move while the defender was entering the final year of his Liverpool contract, and club president Florentino Perez had repeatedly hinted that the France international was part of his long-term plans.
Although Konate suggested as recently as April that there was still a strong possibility he would remain at Liverpool, negotiations over a new deal eventually collapsed. Liverpool confirmed in May that the defender would leave when his contract expired, allowing Madrid to move quickly and secure his signature without paying a transfer fee.

However, while Real Madrid avoided paying Liverpool a transfer fee, the deal is far from inexpensive.
Reports in Spain claim Konate will earn around £20.4 million per year, equivalent to roughly £385,000 per week before tax. Madrid are also believed to have agreed a signing-on bonus worth approximately £17.3 million.
Had Liverpool matched those salary demands, Konate would have become the club’s highest-paid player following Mohamed Salah’s departure.
The figures help explain why negotiations between the player and Liverpool ultimately broke down despite positive discussions earlier in the year.
Konate leaves Anfield after five successful seasons in which he established himself as one of the Premier League’s leading defenders.
After arriving from RB Leipzig in 2021, he made 183 appearances for Liverpool and helped the club win the Premier League title, FA Cup and two League Cups. He also played a key role in Liverpool’s run to the 2022 Champions League final.
The French international recently admitted he was saddened not to have had the opportunity to properly say goodbye to Liverpool supporters.
“At that moment, I didn’t know it would be my final time wearing this shirt in front of you,” Konate said when reflecting on Liverpool’s final home game of the season.
At Real Madrid, Konate arrives to strengthen a defence that has undergone significant changes. He will compete with Antonio Rudiger, Dean Huijsen, Raul Asencio and Eder Militao for a starting place, while helping fill the void left by David Alaba’s departure.
Currently with France at the World Cup, Konate’s focus remains on international duty, but once the tournament concludes he will begin a new chapter at the Bernabeu as part of Mourinho’s attempt to return Real Madrid to the top of European football.
