Real Madrid’s summer spending spree shows no signs of slowing down, with the Spanish giants now turning their attention to strengthening both midfield and defense ahead of the new campaign.
Sources have indicated that Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández is among the players admired by the club as Real Madrid continue reshaping their squad under new manager José Mourinho.
The 2024-25 season proved disappointing for Madrid, who ended a second successive campaign without silverware. In response, the club has already completed a series of high-profile signings, bringing in Marc Cucurella, Bernardo Silva and Ibrahima Konaté, while Denzel Dumfries is also expected to join shortly.
Despite those additions, Madrid remain eager to reinforce the center of the pitch. Fernández has emerged as one of several candidates being monitored by the club’s recruitment team.
The Argentina international has long been admired in the Spanish capital, dating back to his impressive spell at Benfica before his move to Chelsea in 2023. However, sources say Madrid have not yet opened formal negotiations and are continuing to evaluate alternative targets.
One of the biggest obstacles remains the financial commitment required to secure Fernández’s signature. Chelsea are reportedly prepared to demand around £120 million if the midfielder seeks a transfer away from Stamford Bridge during the current window.
While Fernández is considered a premium target, Madrid are also exploring less expensive options. Among the names being discussed are West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes and Lille youngster Ayyoub Bouaddi.
Sources close to the situation suggest Fernández would be open to relocating to Spain if an opportunity arises. Mourinho is also understood to be supportive of the move and views the World Cup winner as a player capable of strengthening Madrid’s midfield.
Questions over Madrid’s midfield balance have persisted since the departures of legendary figures Luka Modric and Toni Kroos. The club has struggled to find the same level of control and creativity in recent seasons, making reinforcements a key objective this summer.
Madrid and Chelsea recently worked together successfully on the transfer of Cucurella, although sources caution that any pursuit of Fernández would likely involve far more complex negotiations.
The club’s recruitment plans extend beyond midfield. Mourinho is reportedly keen to add another central defender even after securing Konaté’s arrival.
Manchester City’s Rúben Dias is among the defenders being considered as Madrid continue their squad overhaul. Further additions in attacking positions have also not been ruled out as the club looks to return to the top of European football.
