Elliot Anderson’s rise from local football pitches in Newcastle to becoming one of England’s key World Cup players is continuing at a rapid pace.

The 23-year-old midfielder is expected to feature when England face Ghana in Boston on Tuesday, with his reputation growing both internationally and in the transfer market. Nottingham Forest recently rejected a bid worth around £120 million from Manchester City, with any future deal potentially making Anderson the most expensive British footballer in history.

His development has been particularly painful for Newcastle United supporters. The academy graduate was sold to Nottingham Forest for £30 million in July 2024 after Newcastle sought to comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). Since then, Anderson has developed into one of the Premier League’s most influential midfielders and an important part of Thomas Tuchel’s England squad.

Scotland also missed out on securing Anderson’s international future. Eligible through his Scottish grandmother, he represented Scotland at youth level and received a senior call-up in 2023 before later committing to England.

Born and raised on Tyneside, Anderson first made his mark at Valley Gardens Middle School before progressing through the famous Wallsend Boys’ Club, which has produced stars such as Alan Shearer, Peter Beardsley and Michael Carrick.

Teachers and coaches identified his talent early. He excelled not only in football but also in athletics, cricket and cross-country running. In 2014, he captained Valley Gardens to victory in the English stage of the prestigious Danone Nations Cup, scoring a hat-trick in the final.

His parents, Iain and Helen, ensured he balanced education with the demands of Newcastle United’s academy system, where he was widely regarded as one of the club’s brightest young prospects.

Anderson made his Newcastle first-team debut in an FA Cup tie against Arsenal in January 2021 before joining Bristol Rovers on loan a year later. The spell proved crucial in his development as he gained regular senior football and established himself as one of the club’s standout performers.

He played a significant role in Bristol Rovers’ dramatic promotion to League One in 2022, scoring in the club’s famous 7-0 victory over Scunthorpe United on the final day of the season, a result that secured promotion against the odds.

After returning to Newcastle, Anderson made 55 appearances for the Magpies before his move to Nottingham Forest. His performances at Forest have elevated him into the Premier League’s elite midfielders.

Last season, Anderson recorded the most touches in the Premier League with 3,300, won possession 306 times, won 297 duels and drew 80 fouls — all league-leading figures.

Those statistics, combined with his performances for England, have attracted interest from Manchester City and reinforced his status as one of the country’s most valuable young players.

While transfer speculation continues, Anderson remains focused on England’s World Cup campaign. For many on Tyneside, his success represents the fulfilment of potential that was evident long before he reached the international stage.
