Argentina forward Julian Alvarez has revealed he wants to leave Atletico Madrid, sparking fresh uncertainty over his future amid growing interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

The 26-year-old made the admission after Argentina’s World Cup victory over Austria, confirming he had already spoken to Atletico officials and believes a transfer would be the best outcome for all parties.

Alvarez’s comments come just weeks after Atletico Madrid rejected a €150 million (£130 million) offer from city rivals Real Madrid. Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain have also been heavily linked with the striker, while reports suggest his preferred destination could be Barcelona.

The former Manchester City star joined Atletico in the summer of 2024 in a deal worth around £81.5 million and has established himself as one of the club’s most important players. Since arriving in Madrid, he has scored 49 goals and provided 17 assists in 106 appearances.

While his domestic form dipped last season, Alvarez remained a key figure in Europe. After scoring 17 La Liga goals in his debut campaign, he managed eight league goals in 2025-26 but enjoyed a prolific Champions League run, netting 10 times as Atletico reached the semi-finals before being eliminated by Arsenal.

Alvarez is currently focused on Argentina’s World Cup campaign after recovering from an ankle injury. He has appeared as a substitute in both of Argentina’s opening matches as Lionel Messi’s side progressed through the group stage.

Despite publicly expressing his desire to leave, Alvarez admitted there is no clear timetable for resolving his future. Atletico Madrid have so far shown little willingness to negotiate, having already rejected one of the biggest offers in football history.

With the World Cup now providing a global stage, Alvarez’s transfer situation is expected to remain one of the biggest stories of the summer as Europe’s elite clubs monitor developments closely.
