Tottenham Hotspur have completed another major statement of intent by agreeing a club-record £100 million deal to sign Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali.
The agreement will see Spurs pay an initial £92.5 million, with a further £7.5 million in performance-related add-ons. The Italy international is now expected to complete the formalities of his move after choosing to join Roberto De Zerbi’s ambitious project in north London despite interest from several leading clubs, including Manchester City.
Tonali is reportedly set to become one of Tottenham’s highest-paid players, earning more than £275,000 per week on a long-term contract. His arrival comes less than 24 hours after Spurs reached an £85 million agreement with West Ham United for Portugal midfielder Mateus Fernandes, taking the club’s summer spending beyond the £200 million mark.
The double signing underlines the scale of Tottenham’s rebuild following consecutive 17th-place Premier League finishes. De Zerbi has already strengthened his squad with the arrivals of Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton, while Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Martin Dubravka have joined on free transfers.
Tonali joined Newcastle from AC Milan in 2023 for £55 million and is now set to generate a profit of around £45 million for the Magpies. Club officials reportedly believe the package represents excellent value and will provide the financial flexibility to strengthen multiple areas of Eddie Howe’s squad during the remainder of the transfer window.
The midfielder’s departure will become Newcastle’s second-largest sale, behind only the £125 million transfer of Alexander Isak to Liverpool. The funds are already expected to accelerate the club’s recruitment plans, with Hoffenheim winger Bazoumana Toure among the players being targeted as Newcastle begin reshaping the squad.
Tottenham have also balanced their spending by agreeing the £50 million sale of defender Luka Vuskovic to Brighton, although the arrival of Tonali is unquestionably the headline move of the summer.
For Spurs, the capture of Tonali represents another clear sign of their renewed ambition. After securing Fernandes and now adding one of Europe’s most highly regarded midfielders, De Zerbi appears to be assembling a squad capable of challenging much higher up the Premier League table in the coming season.
