Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck has addressed growing speculation surrounding his future after reports linked him with a summer move to Real Madrid.
The Germany international recently committed his future to Dortmund by signing a contract extension until 2031. However, the agreement reportedly includes a special release clause that could allow some of Europe’s biggest clubs to tempt him away from Signal Iduna Park.
Real Madrid are understood to be among the clubs monitoring the situation closely.
Reports in Germany claim Jose Mourinho has identified Schlotterbeck as a key defensive target as he continues rebuilding the Spanish giants ahead of the new season. The clause is believed to be worth between €50 million and €60 million and can reportedly only be activated by a select group of elite clubs.
Liverpool are also said to be among the sides capable of triggering the provision, setting up the possibility of a major transfer battle for one of Germany’s most highly-rated defenders.
Despite the growing interest, Schlotterbeck insists his focus remains firmly on international duty.
Speaking from Germany’s World Cup training camp in the United States, the centre-back acknowledged the transfer rumours but made it clear they are not distracting him from preparations for the tournament.
The 26-year-old said he was aware of the reports but stressed that all of his attention is currently directed towards Germany’s opening World Cup fixture.
Schlotterbeck is expected to play a key role for Julian Nagelsmann’s side and is likely to start alongside Jonathan Tah when Germany begin their campaign against Curacao.
His performances on the international stage could further increase interest from Europe’s top clubs.
The inclusion of the release clause has generated mixed reactions among Dortmund supporters, with some questioning why the club agreed to such terms shortly after extending his contract.
However, German football legend Lothar Matthaus believes the arrangement benefits both parties.
Matthaus argued that Dortmund have protected the player’s value while simultaneously recognising his ambition to potentially take the next step in his career if a major opportunity arises.
According to the former Germany captain, clubs such as Real Madrid represent the type of destination that could justify an eventual departure.
For now, Dortmund remain protected by a long-term contract and retain control over the situation.
Yet with Real Madrid already making contact and Liverpool continuing to monitor developments, speculation surrounding Schlotterbeck’s future is unlikely to disappear anytime soon.
