Manchester United have reportedly decided against making a move for AC Milan winger Rafael Leão, leaving Tottenham Hotspur with a clearer path to land the Portugal international this summer.
Leão is expected to leave the San Siro before the transfer window closes after reaching an understanding with AC Milan that a fresh start would be the best solution for both parties. While clubs from the Saudi Pro League have expressed interest, the 27-year-old is believed to favour remaining in European football, with the Premier League his preferred destination.
Tottenham have emerged as one of the leading contenders for his signature, with reports suggesting the winger has already indicated he would welcome a move to north London if the clubs can reach an agreement.
Manchester United, meanwhile, have had the opportunity to enter the race but appear ready to look elsewhere.
According to reports, Leão’s representatives approached United to explore the possibility of a move to Old Trafford. However, manager Michael Carrick is not believed to regard the Portuguese star as one of his priority targets, meaning the club are unlikely to pursue negotiations.
That decision could prove significant in the battle for one of Europe’s most talented wide forwards.
Tottenham are continuing an ambitious recruitment drive under Roberto De Zerbi and are expected to strengthen further in attack despite already making major additions during the summer window. Savinho remains their primary target on the wing, but Leão is also viewed as an attractive option as Spurs look to add more pace and creativity to their frontline.
The north London club have also been linked with Bournemouth youngster Eli Junior Kroupi and Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo as they assess several attacking options before the new season.
United’s transfer priorities appear to lie elsewhere.
The Red Devils are actively pursuing West Ham United winger Crysencio Summerville, who is available after the Hammers’ relegation triggered a release clause in his contract. Reports indicate United have already opened club-to-club discussions over a move for the Dutch international, making him a more realistic target than Leão.
Leão’s availability has attracted attention across Europe after AC Milan made it clear they are prepared to sanction his departure.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano recently revealed that both player and club believe a summer exit is now the best outcome.
“Rafa Leão, still expected to leave AC Milan this summer with options to be assessed post-World Cup.
“Leão and club agree on exit as best solution; Saudi Pro League clubs have started approaches.
“He’s waiting for European clubs but Saudi an option too.”
Financially, a deal appears achievable for Premier League clubs.
Although Leão’s contract includes a substantially higher release clause, AC Milan are reportedly willing to negotiate a transfer for between €60 million and €70 million (£51m-£60m). Some reports suggest the Italian club could also consider a loan with an obligation to buy if suitable terms cannot immediately be agreed.
Leão has been one of Serie A’s standout attacking players since joining Milan in 2019, combining explosive pace with impressive dribbling ability and an eye for goal.
With United opting not to pursue the Portugal international, Tottenham now appear well placed to accelerate discussions if they decide he is the right player to strengthen De Zerbi’s attack.
Whether Spurs ultimately choose Leão, Savinho or another target remains to be seen, but Manchester United’s decision has removed one of the biggest potential obstacles from their path.
