Arsenal make Piero Hincapié stance clear as Real Madrid step up defensive search

Jose Mourinho is reportedly an admirer of the Ecuador international, but Arsenal have no intention of selling the versatile defender.

Real Madrid’s search for a new central defender has reportedly led the Spanish giants to Arsenal’s Piero Hincapié, but the Premier League champions are unwilling to entertain the prospect of losing the Ecuador international.

Hincapié only became a permanent Arsenal player this summer after the club activated the option to buy him following a successful loan spell from Bayer Leverkusen. Having played a key role in Arsenal’s Premier League title-winning campaign and their run to the UEFA Champions League final, the 24-year-old has quickly established himself as an important part of Mikel Arteta’s squad.

The defender featured in 41 matches across all competitions during the 2025-26 season, scoring once and providing two assists while demonstrating his ability to operate both at centre-back and left-back.

His versatility has not gone unnoticed in Spain.

Reports suggest new Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has identified the signing of a left-footed central defender as one of his priorities before the new season, with Hincapié among the names under consideration alongside Arsenal teammate Riccardo Calafiori.

According to reports in Spain, Real Madrid value Hincapié at around €60 million (£51.3m), while Calafiori is reportedly rated at €80 million (£68.4m). However, Arsenal’s position appears to leave little room for negotiations.

Sources indicate Arsenal have no desire to part with Hincapié despite the growing interest from the Santiago Bernabéu.

The club had already decided earlier this year to make his move permanent, and that commitment was confirmed when Arsenal officially announced they had activated the purchase option, with the transfer taking effect from 1 July.

Transfer insider Graeme Bailey says Arsenal’s stance has remained consistent throughout.

“Arsenal love Hincapie, there was never a doubt they would make his move permanent.

“The club have no intention of letting him go, but that doesn’t stop clubs looking.

“With Myles Lewis-Skelly likely to be deployed more in midfield, the key for Arsenal is not leaving themselves short in any area.”

The expected shift in Lewis-Skelly’s role is another reason Arsenal are reluctant to weaken their defensive options.

Arteta is believed to view the teenager increasingly as a midfield option next season, making depth across the back line even more important as Arsenal prepare to defend their Premier League crown and compete again in the Champions League.

Real Madrid’s interest comes as Mourinho continues his search for defensive reinforcements.

After reportedly failing in an attempt to prise Ruben Dias away from Manchester City, Los Blancos have widened their shortlist to include several left-footed defenders capable of playing in multiple positions. Hincapié’s profile fits that requirement perfectly, but Arsenal are showing no willingness to open the door to a transfer.

Having only just completed the Ecuadorian’s permanent signing, Arsenal see Hincapié as a long-term part of Arteta’s project rather than a player available for immediate resale.

Unless Real Madrid receive an unexpected change of heart from the Gunners, Mourinho is likely to be forced to pursue alternative defensive targets before the transfer window closes.
