Man Utd step up Manu Koné pursuit as Chelsea threaten midfield transfer hijack

Manchester United have identified the Roma midfielder as their preferred final midfield signing, but Chelsea's growing interest could spark a transfer battle.

Manchester United have made Manu Koné their leading target to complete this summer’s midfield overhaul, with the Roma star now emerging as the club’s preferred choice for the final vacancy in Michael Carrick’s engine room.

After missing out on Elliot Anderson, Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, United opted for a more patient approach in the transfer market before securing deals for Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans. With those two arrivals in place, attention has now shifted towards recruiting a more defensive-minded midfielder capable of adding energy and athleticism.

Koné has climbed to the top of United’s shortlist following his impressive displays for both Roma and France over the past year.

TEAMtalk reports that club officials, including director of football Jason Wilcox, have been particularly impressed by the 25-year-old’s development since moving to Serie A. His performances during France’s run to the World Cup semi-finals reinforced the belief that he has matured into one of Europe’s most complete midfielders.

Transfer correspondent Graeme Bailey says United believe Koné possesses all the attributes required to thrive in the Premier League.

The French international is admired for his mobility, ball-winning ability, tactical discipline and composure in possession—qualities Carrick believes are essential alongside midfielders such as Kobbie Mainoo, Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos. United also feel his valuation of around £51 million (€60m) represents good value in an inflated transfer market.

Manchester United have already held discussions with the player’s representatives, and sources indicate Koné is enthusiastic about the prospect of moving to Old Trafford. His camp have reportedly made it clear that the Premier League club is an attractive destination should Roma decide to sanction a sale.

However, United’s pursuit has become more complicated.

Chelsea have now entered the race for the France midfielder, with TEAMtalk reporting that the Blues have also opened talks as they explore midfield reinforcements of their own. The growing interest from Stamford Bridge has increased the urgency at Old Trafford, where United are keen to avoid another missed opportunity in the transfer market.

Roma appear increasingly open to negotiations.

Head coach Gian Piero Gasperini recently acknowledged the club may need to sell a high-value player despite returning to the UEFA Champions League. He admitted Roma still face financial pressures and suggested greater clarity over Koné’s future should emerge in the coming weeks.

United have also assessed alternative options, including Fulham midfielder Sander Berge, but Koné remains the standout candidate as Carrick looks to complete a midfield rebuild before the new season begins. Should a deal be completed for around £51 million, United’s spending on midfield reinforcements this summer would rise to approximately £135 million.
