Josko Gvardiol has ended speculation over his future by signing a new long-term contract with Manchester City, committing himself to the Premier League club until 2031.
The 24-year-old Croatia international, who attracted transfer interest earlier this summer, has extended his stay at the Etihad after establishing himself as one of City’s most influential players. His renewal follows new contracts signed by Phil Foden and Abdukodir Khusanov as the club continues to secure the core of its squad for the future.
Gvardiol enjoyed an outstanding 2024/25 campaign, earning Manchester City’s Player of the Year award thanks to his consistency, versatility and commanding displays in defence.
Although his season was disrupted by a broken leg suffered during January’s draw with Chelsea, the defender returned before the end of the campaign and went on to represent Croatia at the FIFA World Cup.
With Manchester City preparing for their pre-season tour of Asia under new head coach Enzo Maresca, Gvardiol believes the club has the quality to challenge for every major trophy in the years ahead.
“The players we have here are amazing. This is a world-class squad that is young and full of potential. I truly believe we will have a lot of success in the coming years.”
The Croatian is also looking forward to working under Maresca, despite never having previously played under the Italian.
“Most of the guys have had the opportunity before to work with him. I haven’t met him before. He’s one of the best as well and we all know the job he did at Chelsea.
“I remember when he was at Chelsea, it was difficult to play against them, especially away. We struggled. We’re really happy that he is here with us, and we can learn something new from his ideas and his mentality. He’s here and I think we can achieve some great things together.”
Director of football Hugo Viana said Gvardiol’s new contract reflects Manchester City’s belief that the defender will remain a cornerstone of the team for years to come.
“Josko is a player this club really believes in. He is young, an outstanding professional and already one of the best defenders in the world.
“Manchester City are committed to keeping our best talent, which is why we are so happy this new contract has been agreed.
“Josko epitomises what we want in our defenders – he can play multiple positions, is quick, strong and when he attacks he does it superbly. He is exceptional.
“But the way he conducts himself is also very impressive. This is a young man determined to be the best he can be – an approach that is totally aligned with our overall vision.
“I want to congratulate Josko on this new deal and everyone at City is now focused on ensuring he maximises his potential.”
Having already made more than 120 appearances since joining Manchester City from RB Leipzig in 2023, Gvardiol is expected to play a leading role as Maresca begins a new era at the Etihad with the aim of reclaiming the Premier League title.
