Liverpool’s hopes of signing Djed Spence have been dealt a fresh setback after the Tottenham Hotspur defender was also offered to Manchester United.
The England international has emerged as one of the Premier League’s most sought-after full-backs following an impressive World Cup campaign, with Liverpool, Newcastle United and Inter Milan all monitoring his situation. Tottenham are understood to be prepared to sell the versatile defender for around £35 million this summer.
However, Liverpool are no longer the only top-flight club to be presented with the opportunity to sign the 25-year-old.
According to journalist Ben Jacobs, representatives for Spence have approached Manchester United as they explore potential destinations where the defender would be guaranteed regular first-team football.
Speaking on The United Stand, Jacobs said:
“Djed Spence is a name on the player’s side that has been offered around.
“He has been offered to Liverpool, he has been offered to Manchester United.
“I am not aware yet whether the club’s interested in that deal, but Spence wants to go somewhere and play week in week out, whether it’s on the right and whether it’s on the left.”
Jacobs added that Manchester United have not yet decided whether to pursue the Tottenham defender, stressing that the player’s representatives are simply making Premier League clubs aware of his availability.
United’s priority remains Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall, but with the Magpies reluctant to sell, alternative options are being explored.
Spence fits the profile because of his ability to operate on either flank, making him an attractive option for clubs looking for defensive versatility.
Liverpool have held a longstanding interest in the former Middlesbrough defender.
TEAMtalk previously revealed the Reds were among several clubs tracking Spence, while journalist Tom Barclay has also reported that Liverpool’s interest is genuine, although rival clubs are currently viewed as being in a stronger position.
Despite Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi valuing Spence as a useful squad player, the defender is believed to be assessing his future because he cannot be certain of starting regularly ahead of Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie.
That uncertainty has encouraged his representatives to explore opportunities elsewhere, particularly after his impressive performances for England at the 2026 FIFA World Cup boosted his reputation across Europe.
With Tottenham willing to listen to offers, Liverpool and Manchester United could yet find themselves competing directly for one of the Premier League’s most versatile defenders before the transfer window closes.
