Cristian Romero is reportedly prepared to consider a sensational move to Arsenal, but Tottenham Hotspur are determined not to allow their captain to join their fiercest rivals.
The Argentina international wants to leave Spurs this summer and has attracted interest from several leading European clubs, with Atletico Madrid and Barcelona among the potential destinations. Arsenal have now emerged as another option, and reports suggest Romero would be open to moving across north London.
Tottenham’s position, however, presents a major obstacle.
While Spurs could sanction Romero’s departure for the right offer, they are adamant that the 28-year-old will not be sold to Arsenal. Such a transfer would be particularly controversial given the fierce rivalry between the two clubs.
Romero has been an important figure at Tottenham since initially arriving from Atalanta in 2021. He later completed a permanent move and has developed into one of the club’s senior leaders, captaining the side and helping Spurs win the Europa League.
His future has nevertheless become increasingly uncertain this summer.
Atletico Madrid have been strongly linked with the World Cup winner and remain a possible destination, but another major option may now be emerging in Spain.
Barcelona are reportedly reconsidering Romero as they prepare for life without Ronald Araujo, whose proposed loan move to Liverpool would create an opening in their defence. Spanish reports indicate Romero is waiting to see whether Barcelona make a firm approach before deciding his next move.
That could complicate matters for Atletico as well as Arsenal.
For the Gunners, the bigger question is whether they actually need to make an aggressive move for another established centre-back.
Mikel Arteta already has considerable defensive quality available, meaning Romero would be more of a high-level addition than an emergency signing. His experience, aggression and ability to defend on the front foot would nevertheless strengthen Arsenal’s options for another Premier League and Champions League challenge.
The attraction is easy to understand. Romero is a World Cup and Copa America winner with Argentina and has extensive experience in both the Premier League and European competition.
But persuading Tottenham to strengthen their biggest rivals is another matter entirely.
Spurs’ refusal to entertain an Arsenal transfer means Romero’s most realistic route out of north London currently appears to lead abroad, with Atletico Madrid and Barcelona positioned to benefit if his desire to leave results in a transfer before the window closes.
