Inter Milan have agreed a £30 million deal with Tottenham Hotspur to sign England defender Djed Spence, bringing the full-back closer to a return to Serie A.
The agreement includes a 10 per cent sell-on clause for Spurs, according to Sky Sports News. Spence was given permission to travel to Italy for a medical while negotiations continued, with the clubs now reaching agreement on the overall package.
The transfer comes after Spence enhanced his reputation during England’s run to third place at the 2026 World Cup. His performances helped increase interest in the defender, but regular football at Tottenham was far from guaranteed heading into the new season.
Pedro Porro remains ahead of Spence at right-back, while Spurs have several options capable of operating on the opposite flank, including Destiny Udogie, Andy Robertson, Souza and Ben Davies.
That competition created an opportunity for Inter, who have been searching for another right wing-back.
The Italian giants initially explored a move for Al Ittihad’s Moussa Diaby but encountered difficulties reaching an agreement. Their attention subsequently shifted towards Spence, with negotiations accelerating this week.
For Spence, the prospect of returning to Italy is understood to be attractive.
He previously spent six months with Genoa after joining the Serie A club on loan in January 2024. That spell gave him experience of Italian football before he returned to Tottenham and eventually established himself more prominently in north London.
Spence still had three years remaining on his Spurs contract, plus an option for another season, leaving Tottenham under no immediate contractual pressure to sell. However, the England international is keen on the Inter move.
Tottenham originally signed Spence from Middlesbrough in July 2022. Sky Sports reported at the time that the deal could eventually be worth up to £20m, although the initial fee was lower.
His early Tottenham career proved difficult as first-team opportunities were limited, resulting in loan spells away from the club.
But Spence later fought his way back into contention and eventually earned international recognition. His value rose further following his performances for England at this summer’s World Cup.
Inter are now prepared to invest heavily in the defender as they strengthen their squad for the new campaign.
The £30m agreement represents a sizeable return for Tottenham, while the 10 per cent sell-on clause gives Spurs the possibility of earning additional money if Inter eventually sell Spence.
For the player, the transfer offers an opportunity to return to a league he already knows while competing for one of Italy’s biggest clubs.
With the agreement between Tottenham and Inter now reached and Spence keen on the move, the transfer is moving towards completion.
