Newcastle United are pushing to complete a deal for Benfica right-back Amar Dedic as new manager Matthias Jaissle continues reshaping his squad ahead of the Premier League season.
The Magpies are in advanced negotiations with Benfica over a transfer worth around £30 million and are hopeful an agreement can be reached, according to Sky Sports News reporter Keith Downie.
However, the transfer is not yet complete. Newcastle and Benfica still need to finalise an agreement before Dedic can travel to England to undergo a medical.
Other reports on Saturday suggest negotiations have progressed rapidly. Newcastle are closing in on an agreement with Benfica, with a package of around €35m being discussed.
Dedic’s existing relationship with Jaissle is an important factor behind Newcastle’s pursuit.
The Bosnia and Herzegovina international previously worked with the German coach at Red Bull Salzburg. Jaissle knows the defender’s qualities well and has approved Newcastle’s attempt to bring him to St James’ Park.
Dedic, who turns 24 on August 18, primarily operates at right-back but his versatility allows him to play on either side of the defence.
He came through Salzburg’s youth system and also played for Liefering and Wolfsberger AC before spending part of the 2024-25 season on loan at Marseille.
Benfica then signed him from Salzburg in 2025. The Portuguese club reportedly paid around €12m for Dedic and tied him to a contract running until 2030.
Newcastle’s interest has developed quickly in recent days. Reports earlier this week indicated that Dedic was keen on moving to the Premier League, while Benfica were seeking around €35m for the defender.
The potential transfer comes during a significant rebuilding period at Newcastle following Jaissle’s arrival as manager.
Jaissle has spoken about the need to strengthen his squad after a turbulent summer at St James’ Park, and adding a player he already knows could help the new manager implement his ideas more quickly.
Dedic also brings international experience. The Austrian-born defender represents Bosnia and Herzegovina and was part of their squad for this summer’s World Cup.
Newcastle will now attempt to settle the remaining details with Benfica.
If an agreement is finalised, Dedic will be given permission to travel to Newcastle for his medical before completing what would be a significant addition to Jaissle’s new-look squad.
