Arsenal have agreed a £51 million deal with Aston Villa for England defender Ezri Konsa, bringing Mikel Arteta closer to securing one of his leading defensive targets of the summer.
The agreement follows weeks of negotiations between the Premier League clubs after a sizeable gap initially existed between Arsenal’s valuation and the amount Villa wanted for the 28-year-old.
Konsa has already said goodbye to his Aston Villa team-mates and is expected to undergo his Arsenal medical on Thursday. The deal is worth £51m plus potential add-ons, according to reports.
The breakthrough represents a significant change from earlier negotiations.
Villa had been looking for around £60m for Konsa, while Arsenal had shown little appetite to meet that valuation. Talks continued, however, and the clubs have now found common ground.
Konsa’s versatility has been a major attraction for Arteta. The England international is primarily a centre-back but can also operate at right-back, giving Arsenal additional cover across their defence.

His arrival has become particularly important because William Saliba and Jurrien Timber are currently sidelined by injuries.
Arsenal had also explored a move for Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarell Quansah, another England international capable of covering centre-back and right-back. However, Konsa has remained high on their shortlist and the Gunners have now moved decisively to secure him.
The move would bring Konsa’s seven-year stay at Villa Park to an end.
He joined Aston Villa from Brentford in 2019 and developed into one of the club’s most reliable defenders, becoming a regular under Unai Emery and establishing himself at international level.
Konsa was an important member of the England squad that reached the semi-finals of the 2026 World Cup. His performances further strengthened his reputation before Arsenal intensified their pursuit this summer.
The defender has two years remaining on his Villa contract, which had put the Midlands club in a strong negotiating position. Arsenal’s willingness to raise their offer ultimately helped bridge the valuation gap.
For Arteta, the signing provides an experienced Premier League defender who can immediately compete for a starting position while covering two areas of the back line.
Arsenal’s defensive depth has become an important issue ahead of their Premier League title defence, particularly with Saliba and Timber unavailable. Konsa’s ability to slot into several defensive roles could therefore make him an important addition during the opening stages of the campaign.
The transfer is not yet formally complete, with Konsa still needing to undergo his medical and finalise the remaining formalities.
But after Arsenal and Aston Villa reached agreement on the £51m package, the England defender is now closing in on a move to the Emirates Stadium.
