Valencia are exploring a late move for Liverpool attacking midfielder Harvey Elliott as the 23-year-old faces an uncertain future at Anfield in the closing days of the transfer window.
The LaLiga club have made contact over a potential deal, according to reports on Friday, with Elliott attracting interest from Spain and Italy after returning to Liverpool following a difficult loan spell at Aston Villa.
Liverpool are prepared to consider offers for Elliott, who has only one year remaining on his contract and was left out of Andoni Iraola’s squad for the Premier League season opener against Newcastle United.
Valencia step up interest in Elliott
Valencia’s interest has developed rapidly, with the Spanish club making an official approach as they explore the possibility of taking Elliott to Mestalla.
Reports later on Friday suggested negotiations had advanced further, with Elliott agreeing personal terms with Valencia following positive discussions. Talks with Liverpool over the structure of a transfer are continuing.
Napoli and Lazio have also shown interest, giving Elliott several possible routes away from Anfield before the window closes.
Only a day earlier, Liverpool had yet to receive an official approach for either Elliott or Federico Chiesa, although the club were willing to listen to proposals for both players.
Valencia have now moved to change that situation.
Iraola handed Elliott a clean slate
Elliott returned to Liverpool this summer following the appointment of Iraola and was initially given an opportunity to force his way back into the first-team picture.
He featured during pre-season and spoke positively in July about representing Liverpool again, describing his return as another opportunity to prove himself.
However, his omission from Liverpool’s opening Premier League squad against Newcastle suggested he remained some way down Iraola’s pecking order.
Elliott faces significant competition for the attacking midfield positions, with Florian Wirtz established as a leading option in the No 10 role.
With regular football far from guaranteed and his contract running down, a move before Tuesday’s transfer deadline could now suit both Liverpool and the player.
Villa loan failed to deliver regular football
Elliott spent the 2025-26 season on loan at Aston Villa after joining Unai Emery’s side on deadline day last September.
The agreement included an obligation for Villa to buy him for £35 million if he reached a specified number of appearances. However, Elliott was used sparingly, with Emery acknowledging during the season that the terms of the deal were influencing his selection decisions.
He ultimately played only 284 competitive minutes during the campaign before returning to Liverpool.
Elliott joined Liverpool from Fulham in 2019 and has made 149 appearances for the Reds, scoring 17 goals. His honours at Anfield include two Premier League titles, two League Cups and the FA Cup.
Valencia’s approach now offers him the possibility of a fresh start in Spain, although Liverpool and the LaLiga club must still reach an agreement before any transfer can be completed.
