Kylian Mbappe has reportedly told Real Madrid he would demand a net salary of €60million (£51m) per year to sign a new contract amid claims Liverpool have contacted his representatives.
The France captain’s current deal runs until the summer of 2029, leaving Madrid in a strong contractual position.
However, Spanish journalist Diego Torres Romano claims Mbappe would only extend that agreement if Madrid accepted his extraordinary wage demands.
There has been no confirmation from Mbappe, Real Madrid or Liverpool regarding either the contract demand or a potential transfer.
Mbappe reportedly sets Real Madrid condition
According to Romano, Mbappe’s preferred outcome would be to secure his release from Madrid and move to the Premier League.
The journalist claims that if Madrid refuse to let him leave, the striker is prepared to fulfil his existing contract professionally.
Romano wrote on X: “Mbappe has it clear: he would only renew with Madrid in exchange for €60million net per year.
“But his priority today is that they give him the letter of freedom to go to the Premier League.
“If they don’t give it to him, he also has it clear: he will fulfil his contract with professionalism.”
A salary of €60m after tax would make Mbappe one of the highest-paid footballers in the world and require an enormous total investment from Madrid.
The club have not publicly confirmed that formal renewal negotiations are taking place or that Mbappe has made such a demand.
Liverpool contact with Mbappe’s mother claimed
The salary report follows separate claims that Liverpool have contacted Mbappe’s mother and representative, Fayza Lamari, about a possible move in 2027.
Spanish journalist François Gallardo told Real Madrid-focused publication Defensa Central that several Premier League clubs are interested in the striker.
Gallardo claimed Liverpool would be Mbappe’s preferred English destination and that the club had already approached Lamari to explore his availability.
He also alleged that Mbappe feels neither loved nor supported inside Madrid’s dressing room.
Any transfer would command an extraordinary fee, with Gallardo estimating Madrid would seek between €200m and €250m (£174m–£217m).
Defensa Central acknowledged that there is no official confirmation from Madrid, Liverpool or Mbappe’s representatives and that no formal negotiations are known to have taken place.
Liverpool have long admired Mbappe
Liverpool’s historical interest in Mbappe is well documented.
Former manager Jürgen Klopp met the player and his family in 2017 while attempting to persuade him to join Liverpool from Monaco.
Mbappe ultimately moved to Paris Saint-Germain before joining his childhood club Real Madrid as a free agent in 2024.
That history makes Liverpool an understandable name to include in speculation about his future, but it does not prove that a fresh transfer operation is under way.
Financing the deal would also be extremely difficult. Liverpool would have to meet Madrid’s valuation, Mbappe’s salary and substantial agent and signing fees.
There are also reasons to treat the reports cautiously. Mbappe said in September that he was happy to represent Madrid, described playing for the club as a privilege and expressed excitement about helping the team win trophies.
Madrid officially signed him to a five-year contract in 2024, meaning the Spanish giants have no immediate need to sell or offer improved terms.
For now, the Liverpool contact and €60m salary demand remain unverified claims rather than evidence that Mbappe is preparing to leave the Bernabéu.
