Manchester United have been encouraged to make a surprise move for veteran striker Robert Lewandowski after confirmation that the Barcelona forward will become a free agent this summer.
The Polish international is preparing to leave Barcelona following a highly successful four-year spell in Spain, where he established himself as one of the club’s most influential players. Despite turning 37, Lewandowski remains one of the most prolific goalscorers in world football and is attracting interest from clubs across Europe, as well as teams in Saudi Arabia and Major League Soccer.
During his time at Barcelona, Lewandowski scored 120 goals in 193 appearances and helped the Catalan giants secure multiple major trophies, including La Liga titles, Spanish Super Cups and the Copa del Rey.
Now, former Manchester United striker Giuseppe Rossi believes Old Trafford could be the ideal destination for the experienced frontman.
Rossi suggested that Lewandowski’s arrival would not only provide goals but also offer invaluable guidance to United’s young striker Benjamin Sesko, who joined the club from RB Leipzig in a £74 million deal.
Sesko showed flashes of his potential during his first campaign, ending the season with 11 Premier League goals after a slow start. Rossi believes learning alongside one of football’s greatest modern goalscorers could accelerate the Slovenian’s development.
The idea has also received backing from former United defender Rio Ferdinand, who believes Lewandowski’s experience could prove vital as the club looks to compete on multiple fronts next season.
United finished third in the Premier League under manager Michael Carrick and secured qualification for the UEFA Champions League. Ferdinand argued that adding a proven winner such as Lewandowski would strengthen the squad’s chances of challenging domestically and in Europe.
While no official approach has been reported, the prospect of signing a player of Lewandowski’s calibre without paying a transfer fee is certain to fuel speculation over the coming weeks.
The striker has long been linked with English football. In fact, he previously revealed he was interested in joining Manchester United earlier in his career before eventually moving to Bayern Munich, where he became one of the game’s most feared goalscorers.
Whether United act on the suggestion remains to be seen, but with Lewandowski still producing at an elite level, many believe he could have one final chapter left in one of Europe’s biggest leagues.
