Brazil suffer major World Cup blow as Wesley injury opens door for Manchester United-bound Ederson
Brazil have been forced into a late change to their World Cup squad after defender Wesley was ruled out of the tournament with a thigh injury sustained during the team’s final warm-up match before the competition.
The 22-year-old full-back suffered the setback during Brazil’s 2-1 victory over Egypt and was visibly distressed as he left the field early in the game. Medical examinations later confirmed an adductor muscle injury in his left thigh, ending his hopes of featuring at the World Cup.
In a statement, the Brazilian Football Confederation expressed its disappointment over the injury, describing Wesley as a highly valued member of the squad and wishing him a speedy recovery.
Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti has responded by calling up midfielder Ederson, who is expected to join the squad in the United States on Monday. The Atalanta star is on the verge of completing a £35 million move to Manchester United, with the transfer expected to be finalised in early July.
Ederson has earned three senior caps for Brazil, with his most recent appearance coming in March 2025. His inclusion provides Ancelotti with additional midfield options, although Wesley’s absence leaves Brazil short of specialist cover at right-back.
The injury occurred during Brazil’s final pre-tournament friendly against Egypt in Cleveland. Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes gave the South Americans an early lead after capitalising on a defensive mistake, but Egypt quickly levelled through Mostafa Zico after a misplaced pass from Marquinhos.
After making a number of changes at half-time, Brazil regained control and secured victory when teenage striker Endrick finished off a low cross from Raphinha to score the winning goal. The result followed Brazil’s emphatic 6-2 victory over Panama in their previous friendly.
Ancelotti praised his team’s performance, highlighting their organisation, intensity and pressing ahead of the tournament.
Five-time world champions Brazil begin their World Cup campaign against Morocco in New York on Saturday. They will then face Haiti in Philadelphia before taking on Scotland in Miami in their final Group C match.
Elsewhere in the group, Haiti suffered a 2-1 defeat to Peru in their final preparation game, while Morocco were scheduled to complete their build-up against Norway.
