Galatasaray prepare shock transfer raid for Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk

Turkish champions are reportedly ready to make their move as uncertainty grows around Liverpool's summer rebuild

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has emerged as a surprise transfer target for Turkish champions Galatasaray, with reports claiming the Istanbul giants are preparing to test Liverpool’s resolve with an official approach.

The Dutch defender remains one of the most respected centre-backs in world football despite entering the latter stages of his career. However, speculation over his future has intensified amid a summer of major change at Anfield.

Liverpool have already seen several high-profile departures, including Mohamed Salah, Ibrahima Konate and Andy Robertson, following a disappointing campaign that ended with the club finishing fifth in the Premier League.

The Reds have since appointed Andoni Iraola as their new head coach after parting ways with Arne Slot and are now facing important decisions regarding several senior players.

Van Dijk is among those attracting interest.

According to reports in Turkey, Galatasaray are considering launching an official bid once the transfer window reopens. Journalist Yağız Sabuncuoğlu claims the Turkish champions are expected to step up their interest after June 15 as they explore the possibility of signing the Liverpool skipper.

Further reports suggest discussions regarding a potential move have gathered pace in recent weeks, with Galatasaray viewing Van Dijk as a marquee signing capable of strengthening their defence and leadership group.

The 34-year-old has been a cornerstone of Liverpool’s success since arriving from Southampton in 2018. During his time at Anfield he has helped the club win the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup and Club World Cup while establishing himself as one of the game’s elite defenders.

Despite growing transfer speculation, Van Dijk has repeatedly demonstrated his commitment to maintaining the highest standards as he enters the latter stages of his career.

Speaking recently about his longevity, the Netherlands international credited strict discipline for his continued success.

Van Dijk revealed that meticulous attention to recovery, nutrition, physical therapy and conditioning has allowed him to remain available for selection year after year. He highlighted the importance of maintaining the correct lifestyle and taking personal responsibility for consistently performing at the highest level.

The defender also reflected on his remarkable durability since returning from a serious knee injury, noting that he has regularly featured in more than 40 matches per season for Liverpool.

For now, there is no indication Liverpool are actively looking to sell their captain, and any move would likely depend on both the club’s rebuilding plans and Van Dijk’s own ambitions.

Nevertheless, Galatasaray’s reported interest adds another intriguing subplot to what is already shaping up to be a dramatic summer at Anfield.

Whether the Turkish champions can persuade one of Liverpool’s greatest modern-day players to leave remains to be seen, but the rumours are unlikely to disappear any time soon.
