Sir David Beckham has described receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame as a moment he never imagined possible, saying the honour was extraordinary for a “working-class English soccer player” from East London.

The former England captain was celebrated in Los Angeles on Friday for his contribution to football in the United States and his wider influence on sport, entertainment and popular culture.

Speaking during the ceremony, Beckham reflected on his journey from the East End of London to becoming one of the most recognisable sporting figures in the world.

“I’ve experienced some amazing moments in my career, but to be here in Los Angeles receiving a star on the world-famous Walk of Fame is truly incredible,” he said.

“I’ve always been a dreamer, but I could never have imagined that an honour like this would come to a working-class English soccer player like me.”

Beckham also spoke warmly about his love for America, recalling how he grew up watching American television and dreaming big as a young football fan.

Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise was among those paying tribute to Beckham’s achievements. The actor praised the football icon’s remarkable career, which included becoming the first English player to win league titles in England, Spain, France and the United States.

Beckham joked that standing alongside Cruise was “mind-blowing”, revealing that he had long admired action heroes and noting that his first movie date with wife Victoria was watching Jerry Maguire, starring Cruise.

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star became emotional as he thanked those closest to him.

He paid tribute to his parents and sisters for their support throughout his career before turning his attention to wife Victoria Beckham.

“Victoria, my amazing wife of almost 30 years, without whom none of this would be possible or enjoyable,” he said.

Beckham also praised his children, describing them as his greatest motivation and saying his proudest achievement was being their father.

Fighting back emotion, he said he hoped his children would one day bring their own children to see the star and tell them the story of a boy who dared to dream.

Victoria Beckham also addressed the crowd, joking that she initially thought the Hollywood honour was linked to her appearance in the 1997 Spice Girls film Spice World.

The fashion designer and former pop star praised her husband’s loyalty, kindness and dedication to family, saying she was immensely proud of everything he had achieved.

The couple were joined by Romeo, Cruz and Harper Beckham at the ceremony. Their eldest son Brooklyn was not present.

The latest recognition adds to an already glittering list of achievements for Beckham, who enjoyed a trophy-laden playing career before becoming a global ambassador for football and a leading supporter of charitable causes through UNICEF.

Having received a knighthood last year for services to sport and charity, Beckham can now add a Hollywood Walk of Fame star to his growing collection of honours.
