Manchester United are stepping up their pursuit of West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes and are increasingly confident of securing his signature as they continue reshaping their squad ahead of the new season.

The Red Devils have already strengthened their midfield by agreeing a deal for Atalanta star Ederson, but their recruitment drive is far from over.

United are expected to add at least one more central midfielder this summer, with further departures anticipated at Old Trafford.

Veteran midfielder Casemiro is set to leave after agreeing a move to Inter Miami, while Manuel Ugarte is also expected to be sold as the club looks to refresh its options in the middle of the park.

One player who appears to have moved to the top of United’s shortlist is Mateus Fernandes.

The Portugal international has attracted interest from several European heavyweights, including Arsenal, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain. However, reports suggest Fernandes favours a move to Old Trafford over other destinations.

According to Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, Manchester United have already assessed the player’s contractual demands and do not expect any issues when it comes to agreeing personal terms.

The main challenge remains reaching an agreement with West Ham.

The London club reportedly value Fernandes at around £85 million and are expected to reject Manchester United’s opening offer.

Sources indicate United are preparing an initial bid below West Ham’s valuation, although there is confidence negotiations will continue and eventually lead to a compromise.

The midfielder enjoyed an impressive campaign and is viewed as one of the Premier League’s most promising young talents, making him a key target for United’s recruitment team.

While Fernandes is currently the priority, Manchester United are also planning further midfield additions.

Newcastle United star Sandro Tonali and Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba have both been linked with the club in recent months.

However, fresh reports suggest Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott could emerge as the preferred option for a third midfield signing.

The talented England Under-21 international has impressed at the Vitality Stadium and remains highly rated within football circles.

Manchester United’s interest in Scott is expected to intensify if Ugarte’s departure is finalised.

Bournemouth reportedly value the midfielder at around £80 million, although uncertainty over his contract situation could strengthen the position of interested clubs.

Scott has just two years remaining on his current deal and has yet to agree an extension despite Bournemouth’s efforts to secure his long-term future.

Liverpool are also believed to be monitoring the situation, with reports suggesting new manager Andoni Iraola is interested in a reunion with the midfielder.

For Manchester United, though, Fernandes remains the immediate focus.

With personal terms unlikely to present an obstacle and the player reportedly keen on the move, attention now turns to whether the club can persuade West Ham to lower their demands and complete another major midfield signing.
