Liverpool are set to complete the signing of Spain winger Victor Munoz after triggering the £34.5 million release clause in his Osasuna contract, handing new manager Andoni Iraola his first major addition at Anfield.
The 22-year-old has agreed a long-term contract and underwent a medical in the United States, where he is currently part of Spain’s World Cup squad. Liverpool accelerated negotiations following Iraola’s arrival, with the former Bournemouth boss identifying his fellow Spaniard as a key target for the club’s attacking rebuild.
Munoz’s arrival comes as Liverpool begin planning for life after Mohamed Salah and look to reshape their forward line ahead of a new era under Iraola.
The Reds moved quickly to beat off strong competition from across Europe. Newcastle United appeared to be leading the race after holding advanced talks with Osasuna and the player, but Liverpool stepped in at the last moment and agreed to meet the winger’s full release clause.
Manchester United, Bayer Leverkusen, Real Madrid and Barcelona were also credited with interest in the Spain international before Liverpool secured the deal.
Iraola’s influence proved decisive.
The Liverpool manager has closely followed Munoz’s development in La Liga and reportedly urged sporting director Richard Hughes to fast-track the transfer. The pair view the winger as an ideal fit for Liverpool’s evolving style because of his pace, versatility and ability to play anywhere across the front three.
Munoz can operate on either flank or through the middle, giving Liverpool valuable cover while Hugo Ekitike recovers from an Achilles injury. His arrival is also not expected to affect the development of highly-rated youngster Rio Ngumoha, who remains part of the club’s long-term plans.
The Spanish winger enjoyed a breakthrough campaign with Osasuna, scoring six goals and providing two assists in La Liga while helping the club avoid relegation. His performances earned him a first senior Spain call-up earlier this year and he marked his debut with a goal against Serbia.
Munoz’s route to the top has been unusual. Born in Barcelona, he spent time in the youth systems of both Barcelona and Real Madrid before joining Osasuna last summer. Real Madrid retained a percentage of his economic rights and are expected to benefit financially from the transfer.
Liverpool’s business may not stop there.
The club remain interested in Ivory Coast winger Yan Diomande, although RB Leipzig’s valuation of more than £100 million is considered a major obstacle. Paris Saint-Germain are also monitoring the highly-rated youngster.
Meanwhile, Federico Chiesa’s future remains uncertain as the Italy international continues to attract interest from Serie A clubs after struggling for regular game time at Anfield.
For now, though, Liverpool supporters can look forward to the arrival of one of Spain’s brightest young attacking talents as Iraola begins putting his stamp on the squad.
