Real Madrid are reportedly exploring a blockbuster move for Manchester City defender Ruben Dias after new manager Jose Mourinho personally held talks with the Portugal international over a potential switch to the Bernabeu.
The Spanish giants are expected to strengthen their defence this summer and Dias has emerged as one of Mourinho’s priority targets as he begins reshaping the squad following his return to Madrid. Reports in Spain claim the Portuguese coach has already opened direct communication with the Manchester City centre-back to discuss the possibility of joining Real Madrid.
Dias has been one of City’s most influential players since arriving from Benfica in 2020, helping the club win multiple Premier League titles and the Champions League. However, uncertainty surrounding the club’s new era following Pep Guardiola’s departure has fuelled speculation over the defender’s future.
According to reports, Real Madrid view the 29-year-old as the ideal solution to long-standing concerns in central defence. Injuries, ageing defenders and inconsistency at the back have left the club searching for an experienced leader capable of transforming the backline.

Mourinho is believed to be a strong admirer of Dias and sees him as a key figure in his rebuilding plans. The veteran coach recently returned to the Spanish giants on a three-year contract after the club endured another disappointing season without major silverware.
Real Madrid have already been active in the transfer market. The club has secured the signing of Marc Cucurella from Chelsea and is also close to completing deals involving Bernardo Silva and other defensive reinforcements as Mourinho oversees a major squad overhaul.
While no agreement has been reached for Dias, reports suggest Real Madrid’s interest is serious and could intensify in the coming weeks. The player is now firmly in Real Madrid’s orbit and is valued at around €55 million as matters stand. His current contract with Manchester City runs until 2029, meaning any potential transfer could prove complicated and would likely require significant negotiations between the two clubs.
For now, Dias is focused on Portugal’s World Cup campaign, but Madrid’s pursuit is expected to be one of the major transfer stories to watch as Mourinho attempts to build a team capable of returning the club to the top of European football. It remains to be seen how negotiations with Manchester City progress should Real Madrid decide to formalise their interest in the experienced defender.
