Tottenham Hotspur remain hopeful of signing Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo this summer, with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano insisting the situation is one to watch as the transfer window enters a crucial phase.
Spurs have admired the Netherlands international for several weeks and continue to monitor his situation, although Liverpool are yet to make a final decision on whether they are prepared to sanction his departure.
Romano believes Tottenham’s interest is genuine and suggested the London club could make a move if Liverpool soften their current stance.
“Keep an eye on Tottenham Hotspur and Cody Gakpo in the next weeks. They really like the player.”
The transfer specialist has also explained that any potential deal rests entirely with Liverpool.
According to Romano, the Merseyside club are not actively looking to sell Gakpo and will only assess his future after new head coach Andoni Iraola has completed his evaluation of the squad.
Gakpo’s position at Anfield has come under increased scrutiny following reports that Liverpool are targeting a marquee move for Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola. The arrival of another left-sided attacker could reduce the Dutchman’s opportunities, particularly with highly-rated youngster Rio Ngumoha also expected to feature more prominently this season.
Despite speculation over his future, Liverpool have not opened negotiations with any club.
Romano has stressed that the Reds remain satisfied with Gakpo and have been encouraged by his performances during the FIFA World Cup, meaning no decision on a transfer has been taken.
Interest in Gakpo is not limited to Tottenham.
Turkish giants Fenerbahce have also been linked with the 27-year-old and are reported to have explored the possibility of signing him. However, the Dutch international has made it clear he has no interest in leaving one of Europe’s top five leagues at this stage of his career, effectively ruling out a move to Turkey for now.
That stance leaves Tottenham in a stronger position should Liverpool eventually decide to listen to offers.
The North London club are also monitoring Manchester City winger Savinho as they continue their search for attacking reinforcements, and reports suggest Spurs could sign more than one wide player before the transfer window closes.
Gakpo joined Liverpool from PSV Eindhoven in January 2023 and has contributed 73 goals and assists in 180 appearances for the club. Although he endured a difficult campaign last season, his quality and versatility continue to attract interest from several leading European clubs.
For now, Tottenham’s hopes remain alive, but everything hinges on whether Liverpool and Iraola decide Gakpo still has a key role to play at Anfield.
