Trevoh Chalobah’s long wait for a World Cup opportunity is finally over after the Chelsea defender received a surprise call-up to England’s squad following Tino Livramento’s injury.
England manager Thomas Tuchel moved quickly to bring Chalobah into the squad after Newcastle United full-back Livramento was ruled out of the tournament with a calf injury sustained during training.
The 26-year-old Chelsea defender is now travelling to England’s training base in Kansas City and could soon find himself involved in the biggest tournament of his career.
For Chalobah, the call-up represents the fulfilment of a dream nearly a decade in the making.
Back in 2018, as a teenager watching England reach the World Cup final, Chalobah posted a simple message on social media: “One day #Believe.”
Eight years later, that ambition has become reality.
Although he has only one senior England cap, Chalobah has remained on the national team’s radar for some time. He played the full 90 minutes in a friendly against Senegal in June 2025 and was included in several World Cup qualifying squads under Tuchel.
Now circumstances have finally opened the door.
His selection is not simply a reaction to Livramento’s injury but also reflects the qualities Tuchel values in his squad.
Chalobah’s versatility is considered one of his biggest strengths. While naturally a centre-back, he is equally comfortable operating at right-back or as part of a back three, giving England valuable tactical flexibility during the tournament.
That adaptability appears to have been a major factor in Tuchel’s decision.
The England boss has consistently favoured physically strong, positionally intelligent defenders capable of performing multiple roles rather than specialist players limited to a single position.
Chalobah fits that profile perfectly.
The defender also has an existing relationship with Tuchel from their time together at Chelsea, where the German coach worked closely with him during one of the most important periods of his development.
That familiarity means Chalobah already understands many of the tactical demands and expectations Tuchel places on his defenders.
While he will not arrive in time for England’s World Cup opener against Croatia, Chalobah is expected to join the squad shortly afterwards and could feature in a behind-closed-doors match against Sporting Kansas City as he builds match fitness.
His arrival also provides important insurance for England.
Questions remain over the fitness of first-choice right-back Reece James following another injury-disrupted season, while the demands of a World Cup campaign mean squad depth will be crucial if England are to challenge for the trophy.
For Chalobah, the opportunity could hardly have arrived at a better time.
After years of patience, hard work and perseverance, the Chelsea defender now has the chance to prove he belongs on football’s biggest stage.
What began as a heartbreaking injury setback for Livramento may ultimately become the defining moment of Chalobah’s international career.
