Atletico send brutal message to Barcelona over Alvarez transfer

Enrique Cerezo points to €500m release clause as Barcelona's pursuit of Julian Alvarez hits a major obstacle

Barcelona’s ambitious pursuit of Julian Alvarez has suffered a major setback after Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo delivered a blunt message to the Catalan giants: pay the release clause or forget about signing the striker.

The Argentine forward has emerged as Barcelona’s top target to eventually replace veteran striker Robert Lewandowski, with head coach Hansi Flick reportedly identifying Alvarez as the ideal long-term leader of his attack.

However, Atletico Madrid have made it crystal clear that they have no intention of negotiating.

Cerezo dismissed speculation that his club could be tempted into selling the 26-year-old and insisted Alvarez remains firmly part of Atletico’s plans.

“Julian is an Atletico Madrid player,” Cerezo said.

“Whoever wants him can look at the contract and the release clause. If they’re interested, they’ll sign him. If not, they won’t.”

The comments represent a significant blow to Barcelona, who had reportedly been preparing an offer worth more than €135 million in an attempt to test Atletico’s resolve.

While such a proposal would rank among the biggest transfers in football history, Atletico appear unwilling to consider anything below Alvarez’s staggering €500 million buyout clause.

The situation has added fresh fuel to an increasingly bitter rivalry between the two clubs.

Relations have deteriorated in recent weeks after Atletico publicly mocked Barcelona’s interest in Alvarez through a series of parody social media posts involving stars such as Lamine Yamal and Pedri.

The Madrid club also accused Barcelona of attempting to unsettle the player through what it described as a campaign of strategic media leaks designed to influence future negotiations.

Atletico’s frustration reflects how highly they value Alvarez.

Since arriving from Manchester City, the World Cup-winning forward has established himself as one of Europe’s most complete attackers, combining goals, creativity and relentless work rate.

The club views him as a cornerstone of their future project and has repeatedly insisted he is not available for transfer.

Barcelona’s challenge is made even more complicated by competition from elsewhere.

Reports suggest Real Madrid recently tested Atletico’s resolve with a massive €150 million bid of their own. The offer was swiftly rejected, underlining just how determined Atletico are to retain their star forward.

The failed approach is understood to have been linked to Real president Florentino Perez’s search for a marquee signing following his re-election.

If a €150 million proposal from their city rivals was not enough to open discussions, Barcelona are unlikely to find negotiations any easier.

The financial reality also presents a significant obstacle.

Despite improvements in their economic situation, Barcelona continue to operate under financial restrictions and scrutiny. Funding a deal anywhere near Atletico’s valuation would represent one of the biggest challenges in the club’s recent history.

For now, Atletico remain unmoved.

With both of Spain’s biggest clubs reportedly interested, Alvarez’s value appears only to be rising, leaving Barcelona facing a difficult decision: continue pursuing their dream target or turn their attention elsewhere before the transfer window slips away.
