Mason Greenwood could be on the move again just one year after joining Marseille, with Roma stepping up their efforts to bring the former Manchester United forward to Serie A.
The Italian club have identified Greenwood as one of their top transfer priorities and manager Gian Piero Gasperini is reportedly taking a hands-on approach to secure the deal.
According to reports in Italy, Gasperini has personally contacted the 24-year-old and urged him to remain patient while Roma finalise their opening offer to Marseille.
The veteran coach is understood to view Greenwood as the ideal addition to strengthen his attack after expressing concerns about his team’s lack of firepower during the 2025-26 campaign.
Roma’s determination appears to be paying off.
The club have reportedly reached an agreement in principle with Greenwood over personal terms, with the player said to be open to a move to the Italian capital. The proposed contract would include a salary package beginning at around €4 million net per season.
Interest from elsewhere has also eased.
Turkish giants Fenerbahce had previously been linked with the forward, but their pursuit has reportedly cooled following recent developments at the club, leaving Roma in a strong position.
Roma owner Ryan Friedkin is also believed to have been involved in discussions with Greenwood’s representatives as the club seeks to convince the player that he would play a central role in Gasperini’s plans.
However, negotiations between the clubs remain some distance apart.
Marseille are reportedly under pressure to raise funds in order to satisfy Financial Fair Play requirements, but they are reluctant to part with one of their most valuable assets cheaply.
Greenwood impressed during his spell in Ligue 1 and the French club are believed to value him at around €55 million.
Roma, meanwhile, are expected to submit an opening proposal worth approximately €40 million, including performance-related bonuses.
The Serie A side are also exploring alternative structures, including a loan deal with an obligation to buy, although Marseille may prefer an immediate permanent sale to improve their financial position.
The transfer is also attracting interest in Manchester.
Manchester United inserted a sell-on clause when Greenwood left Old Trafford, meaning the Premier League club would receive a percentage of any future transfer fee.
As a result, United are monitoring developments closely as a potential deal could provide a welcome boost to their own transfer budget this summer.
Reports suggest Roma may even be willing to include an additional future sell-on percentage in their proposal to help bridge the valuation gap and persuade Marseille to negotiate.
Signs are emerging that Greenwood is preparing for a move.
According to reports, the forward has already begun arrangements to leave his home in France as speculation surrounding a transfer to Italy continues to intensify.
While discussions are ongoing and no agreement has yet been reached between the clubs, Roma’s pursuit is gathering momentum.
