Tottenham Hotspur have continued their summer rebuild by completing the signing of Dutch defender Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton in a deal worth £52 million.
The Netherlands international becomes Spurs’ third arrival of the transfer window as manager Roberto De Zerbi reshapes a squad that narrowly avoided relegation from the Premier League last season.
Tottenham endured another difficult campaign in 2025-26 and only secured survival with a crucial final-day victory over Everton. Following back-to-back 17th-place finishes, the club has moved aggressively in the transfer market to strengthen a defence that has conceded 122 league goals across the last two seasons.
Van Hecke was one of De Zerbi’s top targets, with the Italian keen to reunite with a player he coached during his spell at Brighton. After two offers were rejected, Tottenham finally secured an agreement with the Seagulls after submitting a £52 million bid.
The 26-year-old has signed a long-term contract and will officially join his new club following the conclusion of the World Cup.
Speaking after completing the move, Van Hecke described the transfer as a dream opportunity.
“It’s a huge honour to become a Spurs player and when you join such a big club, it’s a dream come true,” he said.
“I already have a really strong connection with the head coach, who I’m looking forward to working with again. Micky van de Ven has also told me some great things about the club, so I can’t wait to get started.
“I’ve been at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as an opposition player and now I’m looking forward to walking out there in front of our fans wearing the Spurs shirt. That will be a special moment.”
De Zerbi has made rebuilding Tottenham’s defence his priority since taking charge. Experienced left-back Andy Robertson and Argentine centre-back Marcos Senesi have already arrived on free transfers, with Van Hecke now becoming the headline addition.
The Spurs boss believes the Dutch defender has all the qualities needed to help transform his side.
“Jan Paul is someone I know very well from our time together at Brighton, and I’m delighted to be working with him again,” De Zerbi said.
“He is a strong, intelligent centre-back who is brave in possession and plays with personality.
“Those are important qualities for the way I want our team to set up. Off the pitch he is mature, a leader and has a hunger to learn and improve every day.”
Van Hecke began his professional career with NAC Breda before joining Brighton in 2020. His breakthrough came under De Zerbi during the 2022-23 season, and he has since established himself as one of the Premier League’s most highly-rated ball-playing defenders.
His performances earned him international recognition with the Netherlands and attracted interest from several clubs across Europe.
Tottenham hope Van Hecke’s arrival will provide the defensive stability they have lacked in recent years as the club attempts to climb away from the lower reaches of the table and rebuild under De Zerbi.
With Robertson, Senesi and Van Hecke already through the door, Spurs’ summer overhaul is gathering momentum as preparations begin for a crucial 2026-27 campaign.
