Arsenal have seen an opening bid rejected in their pursuit of highly-rated Leicester City teenager Jeremy Monga, but the Premier League champions remain determined to complete a deal for one of English football’s most exciting young prospects.

The 16-year-old winger has emerged as a priority target for Arsenal as the club continues to strengthen its academy and youth development system ahead of the new season.

Monga, who becomes eligible to sign his first professional contract when he turns 17 on July 10, is attracting interest from several clubs. However, Arsenal are understood to be leading the race, with the teenager reportedly favouring a move to the Emirates Stadium.

Leicester are expected to lose a number of players this summer following their relegation to League One, with the club under pressure to comply with English Football League financial regulations.

Although Arsenal’s initial offer has been rejected, there is growing confidence that both clubs will eventually reach an agreement over a compensation package that reflects Monga’s enormous potential.

The teenager enjoyed a remarkable rise last season, becoming a regular member of Leicester’s first-team squad despite his young age. He made Premier League history when he debuted as a 15-year-old, becoming the second-youngest player ever to appear in the competition behind Arsenal star Ethan Nwaneri.

Primarily a right-footed attacker, Monga is comfortable operating from the left wing but can also play across the front line, making him an attractive long-term prospect for Mikel Arteta’s side.

Arsenal have closely monitored his development for several months and first expressed interest during Leicester’s unsuccessful battle against relegation from the Championship.

The North London club are expected to integrate Monga into their pre-season programme if the transfer is completed. A final decision would then be made regarding whether he remains with the academy setup, trains with the first team, or gains experience through a loan move.

The pursuit reflects Arsenal’s broader strategy of recruiting elite young talent. While the club has successfully developed stars such as Bukayo Saka, Ethan Nwaneri, Myles Lewis-Skelly and highly-rated youngster Max Dowman, there is also a desire to strengthen the pipeline of emerging players capable of either reaching the first team or generating significant transfer value in the future.

The move comes during a period of change behind the scenes at Arsenal, with the club currently searching for a new academy director following the departure of Per Mertesacker.

Despite Leicester’s initial resistance, Arsenal remain optimistic that Jeremy Monga will become one of the latest exciting young talents to join their growing project under Arteta.
