Liverpool are preparing an opening bid for Rayo Vallecano defender Andrei Ratiu as Andoni Iraola continues to reshape his squad ahead of the new Premier League season.
The Reds have already strengthened their squad with the signing of Spanish winger Victor Munoz, but recruitment is expected to continue, with right-back emerging as another priority position. Reports indicate Liverpool want greater depth despite having Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley in the squad, particularly after injury concerns affected their options last season.
According to SportsBoom, Liverpool are ready to make their first approach for the Romania international, who has established himself as one of La Liga’s most consistent full-backs. The club believe Ratiu can provide genuine competition for Frimpong rather than simply acting as a squad player.
Ratiu has impressed since joining Rayo Vallecano in 2023, making more than 100 appearances for the Spanish club while also cementing his place in Romania’s national team. The 28-year-old has earned 38 international caps and was named Romanian Footballer of the Year in 2025 after another outstanding campaign.
Liverpool’s interest is understood to stem from the value they believe Ratiu represents in the current transfer market. Reports suggest Rayo Vallecano would consider offers in the region of £21-25 million, either through his release clause or a negotiated fee, making him a relatively affordable option compared with many of Europe’s leading full-backs.
Although Iraola left Rayo Vallecano before Ratiu arrived, the Liverpool head coach is believed to have maintained close links with his former club and is well aware of the defender’s development in La Liga. The Spaniard is keen to build a squad capable of competing across multiple competitions and views greater depth in defence as essential.

Rayo Vallecano are not under immediate pressure to sell. The Romanian defender signed a new long-term contract in late 2025, leaving the Madrid club in a strong negotiating position. However, Liverpool’s growing interest could test their resolve if a formal offer arrives in the coming weeks.
Liverpool’s recruitment drive has focused heavily on players with experience of Spanish football since Iraola’s appointment. Alongside Munoz’s arrival, the club continue to pursue other targets as they reshape the squad following the departure of Mohamed Salah and prepare for another Premier League title challenge.
Competition for Ratiu’s signature could also increase. Barcelona and Manchester City have both been linked with the right-back in recent weeks, although Liverpool are believed to have already opened discussions with the player’s representatives as they seek to move quickly.
Should negotiations progress, Ratiu could become Liverpool’s next summer signing, adding proven La Liga experience and valuable competition in a position the club believes requires greater depth heading into the 2026/27 campaign.
