Man Utd handed major Aurelien Tchouameni transfer boost as Real Madrid soften stance

Fresh reports suggest Manchester United's hopes of signing the France midfielder have received a significant lift.

Manchester United have received renewed encouragement in their pursuit of Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni after fresh reports suggested two of the biggest obstacles to a potential transfer may be easing.

Strengthening central midfield remains one of United’s main objectives this summer as Michael Carrick continues rebuilding his squad following the club’s return to the UEFA Champions League. The Red Devils have already agreed a deal worth around £35 million to sign Atalanta midfielder Ederson, but the club is still searching for another midfielder capable of replacing Casemiro in the long term.

Tchouameni has been admired by Manchester United for several years and continues to feature prominently on the club’s shortlist. Earlier this week, transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano suggested two significant issues were preventing any immediate progress — Real Madrid had not opened the door to a sale, while the France international’s salary was viewed as a potential stumbling block.

However, journalist Ben Jacobs believes the wage issue may not be as problematic as first thought. He has indicated that Manchester United would be prepared to make Tchouameni one of the club’s highest earners if the opportunity to sign him became realistic, arguing that his current salary does not fall into the same bracket as some of the club’s previous top earners.

The bigger question remains Real Madrid’s transfer strategy.

Reports in Spain suggest incoming manager Jose Mourinho wants Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez to strengthen his midfield, a move that could force Madrid to raise funds through player sales. According to journalist Nico Schira, Tchouameni is no longer considered untouchable and could be allowed to leave if the Spanish giants receive an offer in the region of £70 million (€81 million).

While Real Madrid have not publicly confirmed that position, growing speculation surrounding their interest in Fernandez has increased the possibility of midfield changes at the Santiago Bernabeu before the transfer window closes.

For Manchester United, the situation is being monitored closely. The club are also pursuing West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes but have become increasingly reluctant to meet the Championship club’s £80 million valuation. Tottenham Hotspur remain strong competitors for Fernandes, prompting United to continue exploring alternative options in midfield.

Tchouameni would bring elite-level experience to Carrick’s squad. Since joining Real Madrid from Monaco in 2022, the 26-year-old has won multiple major honours, including La Liga and the UEFA Champions League, while establishing himself as a regular for the France national team. His ability to operate both as a defensive midfielder and central defender adds further appeal for a United side seeking greater versatility.

Despite the growing optimism, a deal remains far from straightforward. Real Madrid have yet to formally place Tchouameni on the transfer list, and any negotiations would likely depend on whether Mourinho secures his preferred midfield additions during the remainder of the summer.

For now, Manchester United remain on alert. Should Madrid decide to cash in on the French international, Old Trafford could become a serious destination for one of Europe’s most accomplished midfielders.
