Manchester United and Chelsea have entered the race to sign Sporting CP defender Maxi Araujo, setting up a three-way Premier League battle with Arsenal for one of the standout performers at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Uruguay international has seen his reputation soar following an impressive start to the tournament, scoring two goals and providing an assist in his country’s opening two group matches against Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde. His performances have attracted scouts from several of Europe’s biggest clubs, with Manchester United among those closely monitoring his progress.

According to reports in Portugal, United sent a club representative to watch the 26-year-old during Uruguay’s draw with Cape Verde. The Sporting defender is viewed as an attractive option because of his versatility, with the ability to operate as a left-back, wing-back or further forward on the left flank.

Chelsea are also keeping a close eye on Araujo as they search for reinforcements on the left side of defence following Marc Cucurella’s move to Real Madrid. Xabi Alonso is believed to want a player capable of adapting to multiple tactical systems, and Araujo’s flexibility makes him a strong candidate.

Arsenal, however, were the first Premier League club to make their interest known. Reports earlier this year claimed Mikel Arteta’s side opened discussions with the player’s representatives after being impressed by his displays during Sporting’s Champions League quarter-final ties against the Gunners. The Premier League champions remain admirers, but competition for his signature has intensified significantly.

Sporting remain in a strong negotiating position. Araujo is under contract until 2029 and has an €80 million (£69.3 million) release clause. Although Portuguese reports suggest the Lisbon club could consider offers below that figure, they are under no pressure to sell one of their key players.

The defender has also refused to rule out a summer move. While stressing that he is happy at Sporting, Araujo recently admitted that football can change quickly, comments that have fuelled speculation over his future once Uruguay’s World Cup campaign comes to an end.

Manchester United’s interest forms part of a wider effort to strengthen at left-back as the club looks for long-term competition and cover in the position. Chelsea, meanwhile, are reshaping their defence under Alonso, while Arsenal continue searching for players capable of adding quality and depth to a squad aiming to defend the Premier League title.

With three English heavyweights now tracking his progress and Araujo continuing to impress on football’s biggest stage, Sporting could soon find themselves at the centre of one of the summer’s most competitive transfer battles.
