Manchester United are continuing to explore midfield reinforcements this summer, with Borussia Dortmund star Felix Nmecha emerging as a realistic option should the club fail to secure other top targets.
The Red Devils have already strengthened their midfield by agreeing a deal for Atalanta’s Ederson, but recruitment plans at Old Trafford are far from complete. With Casemiro having departed and uncertainty surrounding Manuel Ugarte’s future, United remain determined to add at least one more central midfielder before the transfer window closes.
Nmecha is one of several names under consideration and interest in the German international has not gone away.
The 25-year-old has enjoyed an impressive rise since leaving Manchester City’s academy system. After establishing himself at Wolfsburg, he earned a move to Borussia Dortmund in 2023 and has since become an important figure in the Bundesliga side’s midfield.
Despite recently signing a contract extension that keeps him at Dortmund until 2030, speculation over his future continues to grow.
Reports suggest the new deal contains release clauses worth around €80 million from 2027 and €70 million from 2028. However, intermediaries involved in discussions around the player’s future are reportedly indicating that a transfer this summer could be possible for a significantly lower figure, potentially around £52 million.
That valuation has attracted attention from several major European clubs.
Manchester United remain among the clubs monitoring the situation, while Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool have also been informed of the conditions required to complete a deal. Interest is not limited to England either, with both Real Madrid and Barcelona understood to be admirers of the midfielder.
Sources close to the situation believe a return to the Premier League is a genuine possibility. Having spent time in England during his development years, Nmecha is familiar with the demands of English football and is thought to be open to the prospect of returning.
For Manchester United, the appeal is obvious.
Nmecha combines physicality, technical quality and tactical intelligence, qualities that have helped establish him as one of Germany’s most highly regarded midfielders. His versatility would also give Michael Carrick additional options in the centre of the pitch.
United’s primary focus remains on securing other midfield targets, including West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes. However, growing competition from Tottenham Hotspur and Real Madrid for Fernandes could force the Old Trafford club to accelerate alternative plans.
With Dortmund potentially willing to listen to offers below the figures previously reported, Nmecha is increasingly being viewed as one of the most attainable elite midfielders available this summer.
As the transfer market intensifies, Manchester United’s long-standing admiration for the German international could yet develop into something more concrete.
