Arsenal are preparing to step up their pursuit of Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes after receiving positive signals during talks with the Brazil international’s representatives, according to reports.

The Premier League champions have identified Guimaraes as their leading midfield target this summer and are now expected to test Newcastle’s resolve with a formal offer after weeks of behind-the-scenes discussions. Sources indicate Arsenal have shifted their focus away from teammate Sandro Tonali, despite previously considering both Newcastle midfielders as marquee additions.

Arsenal have admired Guimaraes since before his move from Lyon to Newcastle in 2022 and believe the 28-year-old would add leadership, experience and quality to Mikel Arteta’s midfield as the club looks to defend its Premier League title.

Reports suggest Arsenal have already made an initial approach worth around £55 million, but Newcastle rejected the proposal immediately and remain adamant the Brazilian is not for sale at that price. The Gunners are now working on an improved bid, with figures of around £80 million being discussed.

While Newcastle’s public stance has not changed, uncertainty continues to surround several of the club’s senior players following the sale of Anthony Gordon and growing interest in Sandro Tonali, Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento. Guimaraes is also entering the final two years of his current contract, although Newcastle are reportedly preparing a lucrative new deal in an effort to keep their captain at St James’ Park.

Manchester City are also monitoring the situation. Pep Guardiola’s side have previously explored moves for both Guimaraes and Tonali, but Tottenham Hotspur’s aggressive pursuit of the Italian midfielder has prompted City to reassess their options. Spurs are understood to be preparing a £100 million bid for Tonali, leaving Guimaraes as an increasingly attractive alternative for Arsenal and City alike.

Despite the growing speculation, Newcastle remain determined to keep hold of one of their most influential players. Club officials continue to insist Guimaraes is central to Eddie Howe’s long-term plans and believe his leadership on and off the pitch makes him difficult to replace.

Arsenal are not relying solely on one target. The club continue to monitor several midfielders, including Lille teenager Ayyoub Bouaddi, Bournemouth’s Alex Scott and West Ham United’s Mateus Fernandes, as they weigh up multiple options before the transfer window closes. However, Guimaraes has emerged as the priority.

Whether an £80 million offer will be enough remains uncertain. Newcastle are under no pressure to sell and are expected to demand significantly more if they are forced into negotiations. Nevertheless, Arsenal believe the encouragement received from the player’s camp has given them reason to pursue one of the biggest deals of the summer.
