Veteran goalkeeper Fernando Muslera has accepted full responsibility for Uruguay’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup after requesting to be substituted at half-time following a costly mistake in the team’s 1-0 defeat to Spain.

Uruguay entered their final Group H match needing a positive result to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive. Instead, their campaign ended in disappointment after Muslera failed to deal with a shot from Alex Baena in the closing stages of the first half, allowing the ball into the net for what proved to be the decisive goal.

The 40-year-old did not return for the second half, with Sergio Rochet replacing him in goal. The unusual change prompted speculation that Uruguay head coach Marcelo Bielsa had decided to withdraw his experienced goalkeeper after the mistake.

However, Bielsa later revealed that the decision came from Muslera himself rather than the coaching staff. The Uruguay manager explained that the goalkeeper requested to be substituted during the interval after his difficult first-half performance.

Following the match, Muslera addressed the media and took full responsibility for Uruguay’s early exit. The former Galatasaray goalkeeper admitted he had fallen below his own standards during the tournament and apologised to his teammates as well as supporters across the country.

Muslera said he had never hidden from criticism during his career and felt it was important to publicly acknowledge his performance. He described the defeat as one of the most painful moments of his career and admitted the emotional impact had been difficult to process after months of preparation for the tournament.

The experienced goalkeeper also reflected on the unique pressures of playing between the posts, acknowledging that the position can quickly swing from moments of glory to painful disappointment. Despite the setback, he said he intends to recover with the support of family and friends before looking ahead to the next chapter of his career.

Uruguay’s defeat completed a disappointing World Cup campaign. Bielsa’s side failed to win a match, drawing against Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde before losing to Spain, while Baena’s goal ensured Spain finished top of Group H and progressed to the knockout rounds.

The elimination has intensified scrutiny of Bielsa’s tenure, with the coach also accepting responsibility for the team’s performances after the match. Reports suggest Uruguay’s disappointing campaign could trigger significant changes before the next international cycle, with questions also surrounding the futures of several senior players.

For Muslera, whose international career has spanned nearly two decades, the defeat may represent his final appearance at a FIFA World Cup. Despite the heartbreaking conclusion, the veteran leaves behind a distinguished career that has seen him become one of Uruguay’s most capped players and one of the country’s most successful goalkeepers of the modern era.
