Chelsea have stepped up their pursuit of Rayo Vallecano defender Pep Chavarria after failing to secure a reunion between head coach Xabi Alonso and Alejandro Grimaldo.

Grimaldo had been one of Alonso’s preferred targets following their successful spell together at Bayer Leverkusen, but the Spain international opted to return home by completing a move to Atletico Madrid instead. Chelsea have now turned their full attention to Chavarria as they continue reshaping the squad ahead of the new season.

The Blues remain determined to add greater experience to one of the Premier League’s youngest squads, with left-back identified as a priority position despite the arrival of highly rated youngster Jorrel Hato.

Chavarria has emerged as Chelsea’s leading alternative after impressing during four seasons in La Liga. The 28-year-old featured 44 times in all competitions for Rayo Vallecano last season, contributing one goal and three assists while establishing himself as one of the division’s most consistent full-backs.

Reports indicate the Spanish defender has already agreed personal terms with Chelsea, leaving negotiations between the two clubs as the final hurdle. Club-to-club discussions are understood to be at an advanced stage, although Rayo Vallecano remain reluctant to lower their demands after rejecting an opening bid. The Spanish club are reportedly pointing to Chavarria’s €50 million release clause as they seek to maximise the transfer fee.

Chelsea are eager to complete the deal as quickly as possible, with Alonso keen to have his preferred defensive options available for pre-season.

The Spaniard views Chavarria as a player capable of competing immediately for a starting place while also bringing valuable leadership and experience to a youthful dressing room. The club believe pairing the experienced full-back with emerging talent Jorrel Hato would provide the right balance for a campaign that includes domestic and European commitments.

Missing out on Grimaldo forced Chelsea to change direction, but the club have reacted swiftly and remain optimistic that Chavarria can become the next addition to Alonso’s squad.

Chelsea also explored the possibility of signing Gabriel Gudmundsson from Leeds United, although that enquiry was quickly rebuffed as the club intensified efforts to land Chavarria instead.
