Manchester City have ruled out any possibility of selling Ruben Dias this summer after rejecting enquiries from several of Europe’s biggest clubs, including Real Madrid, Barcelona and Chelsea.
The Portugal international has emerged as a sought-after defensive target during the transfer window, but City have delivered a consistent response to every club that has made contact: Dias is not available for transfer.
The 29-year-old remains one of the key figures in City’s squad after committing his future to the club by signing a new long-term contract in 2025. Despite the arrival of new head coach Enzo Maresca, the club’s position has not changed.
Sources indicate Dias is regarded as one of the central pillars of Maresca’s rebuilding project, with City determined to retain one of Europe’s most accomplished central defenders as they enter a new era following Pep Guardiola’s departure.

Several leading clubs believed the managerial transition could create an opportunity to test City’s resolve, but those hopes were quickly dismissed.
Real Madrid were among the first sides to make an approach as the Spanish giants continued their search for another elite centre-back, even after completing the signing of Ibrahima Konaté earlier in the transfer window.
However, sources say Madrid were informed that City had no intention of discussing a deal for Dias, effectively ending any prospect of negotiations.
With that avenue closed, the La Liga club have reportedly redirected their attention towards other defensive targets, including Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni and Borussia Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck.
Real Madrid were not the only club to explore the possibility of signing the Portuguese defender.
Barcelona and Chelsea also made enquiries last month while assessing options to reinforce their defensive units ahead of the new season.
Arsenal are also understood to have monitored developments, although City maintained the same position throughout.
The message from the Etihad Stadium has remained unwavering: Dias is considered indispensable and will not be allowed to leave.
Since arriving from Benfica in 2020, the Portugal international has established himself among the game’s leading central defenders, becoming a vital part of City’s success in domestic and European competitions.
His leadership qualities, consistency and experience have cemented his importance within the squad, and the club view him as one of the players around whom Maresca will build his team.
With a long-term contract already in place and City showing no willingness to negotiate, interest from Europe’s elite appears unlikely to alter Dias’ immediate future.
For Real Madrid, Chelsea, Barcelona and Arsenal, attention is now expected to shift towards alternative defensive targets after City’s firm stance brought any hopes of signing the Portuguese defender to an end.
