Barcelona have reportedly decided against signing Marcus Rashford on a permanent basis, opening the door for Manchester United to secure a more lucrative transfer elsewhere this summer.
The England international had been strongly linked with a move to the Camp Nou after personal terms on a proposed three-year contract were reportedly agreed. However, the Spanish champions have now opted not to activate the €30 million (£26m) purchase option included in the arrangement.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed that the clause will expire without being triggered, meaning Rashford is set to return to Manchester United for now.

Barcelona’s decision appears to have been influenced by the arrival of Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United.
According to reports in Spain, manager Hansi Flick preferred Gordon because of his defensive work rate and pressing ability, qualities viewed as essential within his tactical system. Rashford’s defensive contribution was reportedly considered a weaker aspect of his game.
Age also played a role in the decision-making process. Rashford turns 29 later this year and is more than three years older than Gordon, making the Newcastle star a more attractive long-term investment from Barcelona’s perspective.
As a result, Barcelona shifted their focus elsewhere, effectively ending Rashford’s hopes of securing an immediate permanent move to the Catalan club.
Further reports indicate Rashford is no longer considered a priority target, with Barcelona instead concentrating on signing a top-class centre-forward before the transfer window closes.
While club officials have not completely ruled out revisiting the situation later in the summer under different circumstances, any renewed approach would likely depend on developments elsewhere in the market.
The setback could ultimately work in Manchester United’s favour.
Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich are reportedly ready to offer around €40 million (£34.5m) for Rashford, a figure that exceeds Barcelona’s purchase option by approximately £8.5 million.
Such an offer would represent a significantly better financial outcome for United as they continue efforts to reshape their squad ahead of the new season.
Bayern are actively searching for attacking reinforcements after missing out on several transfer targets and view Rashford as a player capable of strengthening their options on the left wing.
The German giants believe the England international could rediscover his best form in the Bundesliga, while Rashford may now be more willing to consider alternative destinations following Barcelona’s decision.
For Manchester United, the situation has evolved from a potentially disappointing outcome into an opportunity to secure a larger transfer fee for one of their highest-profile players.
With Bayern Munich now emerging as serious contenders, Rashford’s future remains one of the most intriguing storylines of the summer transfer window.
