Forest are stepping up their pursuit of the Swedish youngster after opening discussions with Tottenham, but Spurs remain determined to keep him unless a huge offer arrives.

Nottingham Forest have opened discussions with Tottenham Hotspur over a potential move for midfielder Lucas Bergvall, with the Premier League side hoping to capitalise on the player’s desire for more first-team opportunities.

Forest’s interest intensified after the departure of Elliot Anderson, with the club identifying Bergvall as one of their leading midfield targets to strengthen the squad ahead of the new season. Initial dialogue between the two clubs has now begun, although Tottenham remain reluctant to sanction a sale.

Bergvall is understood to be considering his future after Tottenham strengthened their midfield this summer with the arrivals of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes. Increased competition for places has raised concerns over his playing time, prompting the 20-year-old to seek a more prominent role elsewhere.

Despite the midfielder’s wishes, Tottenham have made it clear they would prefer to keep the Sweden international, whom they beat Barcelona to sign in 2024. However, club officials are prepared to listen to offers if a bid reflects their valuation.

Spurs are reportedly seeking around £50 million before considering any sale, a figure that reflects both Bergvall’s age and long-term potential rather than his current output.

Forest are not the only club monitoring the situation. Aston Villa are also believed to be admirers of the Swedish midfielder, while interest from several other clubs could spark competition for his signature if Tottenham soften their stance.

Bergvall has shown flashes of promise since arriving in north London but has yet to fully establish himself as a regular starter. Across 78 appearances in all competitions, he has scored two goals and registered nine assists, leading some to question whether Tottenham’s asking price reflects his current market value.

The midfielder also gained valuable international experience this summer, making one start and three substitute appearances for Sweden during the FIFA World Cup, further enhancing his reputation despite limited minutes at club level.

Forest are expected to continue negotiations in the coming weeks as they attempt to convince Tottenham to do business, although the north London club remain under no pressure to sell unless their valuation is met.
