Manchester United have officially ended any hopes of signing Ederson, with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano insisting there is no chance of the club reviving the deal later in the summer transfer window.
The Brazilian midfielder had looked destined for Old Trafford after United activated his €40 million release clause and reached an agreement over personal terms with the Atalanta star. However, the move unravelled after medical examinations raised concerns that ultimately convinced the Premier League club to abandon the transfer.
Although some reports suggested Manchester United could return with a fresh approach before the transfer deadline, Romano has dismissed those claims entirely.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, the Italian journalist said Atalanta director Cristiano Giuntoli had confirmed exactly what he had reported days earlier—that the transfer is “completely over.” Romano urged supporters to ignore speculation about a late move, stressing that United made a final decision to walk away and have no plans to revisit negotiations.
Romano added that Atalanta were caught off guard by United’s decision, having expected the transfer to go through. The Serie A side have since moved quickly to secure the midfielder’s future by offering him a new contract running until June 2031, with discussions expected to continue in the coming weeks. Ederson is said to be disappointed that the Premier League move collapsed.
Manchester United have already adjusted their recruitment strategy following the failed deal.
The club completed the signing of Andrey Santos before activating Youri Tielemans’ release clause at Aston Villa, strengthening Michael Carrick’s midfield ahead of the new campaign. Those arrivals came after the Ederson move broke down, signalling a change in direction rather than a temporary delay.
Despite those additions, United are still expected to pursue another central midfielder before the transfer window closes.
The club missed out on Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali earlier in the summer, while Carrick is understood to be searching for a more athletic midfielder capable of bringing energy and defensive coverage alongside Kobbie Mainoo, Tielemans and Andrey Santos.
With Ederson no longer an option, United’s recruitment team will now focus on alternative targets who better fit the physical profile Carrick wants in midfield.
As pre-season approaches, the message from Romano and Atalanta is unequivocal: the transfer saga is finished, and the Brazilian’s future now lies in Bergamo rather than Manchester.
