Manchester United are set to hand Marcus Rashford a fresh opportunity under new head coach Michael Carrick, with the England international’s return expected to reshape the club’s remaining transfer business this summer.
Rashford spent last season on loan at Barcelona, where he rediscovered his best form by contributing 14 goals and 14 assists in 49 appearances. His performances helped Hansi Flick’s side retain the La Liga title and lift the Spanish Super Cup, but Barcelona ultimately chose not to activate their £26 million purchase option after strengthening their attack with Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi instead.
With a permanent move to Spain now off the table, United have altered their plans.
According to reports, Carrick and director of football Jason Wilcox have agreed that Rashford will return to the senior squad rather than being isolated from first-team activities. The decision reflects the club’s belief that the 28-year-old can still play an important role at Old Trafford if no suitable transfer materialises.
The change of approach has had an immediate impact on United’s recruitment strategy.
Crysencio Summerville had emerged as one of the club’s leading targets to strengthen the left wing, with United initially planning to use funds generated from Rashford’s departure to finance a move for the West Ham attacker. However, Rashford’s expected reintegration has significantly reduced the likelihood of that transfer progressing.
Speaking on the Stretford Paddock podcast, The Athletic journalist Laurie Whitwell explained that Rashford’s situation has become the key factor behind United’s cooling interest in Summerville.
Whitwell suggested that the club’s transfer plans are closely tied to Rashford’s future, noting that the forward’s sizeable wages make it difficult for United to recruit another player in the same position unless he leaves permanently. He also questioned whether the club might instead prioritise signing a left-back.
Summerville had previously been identified as one of Carrick’s preferred attacking additions.
Sky Sports reported earlier this month that the Dutch international had become a leading target, with United holding exploratory discussions with West Ham. The 24-year-old is understood to have a £40 million relegation release clause, although any final package could rise to around £50 million through performance-related bonuses.
Instead of pursuing another winger, Manchester United could now switch their focus to reinforcing the left side of their defence.
TEAMtalk reports that the club remain determined to sign Lewis Hall from Newcastle United, with INEOS viewing the England international as the long-term successor to Luke Shaw.
While Rashford’s long-term future has yet to be fully resolved, the current expectation is that he will report for pre-season after his post-World Cup break and compete for a place under Carrick. Unless another club comes forward with a satisfactory offer, United appear ready to give one of their academy graduates another opportunity to revive his career at Old Trafford.
