Aston Villa have officially confirmed the signing of Alejandro Garnacho from Chelsea, with the Argentina international joining on a season-long loan that includes a conditional obligation to buy next summer. The conditions are understood to be easily achievable, making a permanent transfer the expected outcome if all goes to plan.
The overall package, including the loan fee and future purchase clause, matches Chelsea’s valuation of around £42.6 million for the winger. Garnacho leaves Stamford Bridge less than a year after completing a £40 million move from Manchester United.
The 22-year-old had not reported for Chelsea’s pre-season training as he sought a move away from the club, with Aston Villa emerging as his preferred destination after positive discussions with manager Unai Emery.
Villa’s announcement comes shortly after the club agreed a British-record £117 million deal to sell Morgan Rogers to Chelsea, with Garnacho arriving as one of the key additions in Emery’s squad rebuild.
Speaking after the transfer was confirmed, Emery welcomed the winger’s arrival and praised both his talent and commitment.
“We are delighted with Alejandro. He is so talented, young and he showed us his wish to help our project. We are really happy.”
Garnacho will wear Villa’s No. 17 shirt, the same number he previously wore for Manchester United and the Argentina national team.
The structure of the deal is significant because both Villa and Chelsea have been managing UEFA financial sustainability rules following recent sanctions. By agreeing an initial loan with a conditional obligation to buy, both clubs have been able to navigate complex accounting regulations while still securing the transfer they wanted.
UEFA’s regulations mean clubs must carefully structure transfers completed within a short period when players move in opposite directions. With Morgan Rogers joining Chelsea and Garnacho heading to Villa, both clubs worked to ensure the arrangement complied with financial rules while protecting the accounting benefits of each transaction.
For Garnacho, the move offers an opportunity to revive his career after struggling for regular football at Chelsea. Villa believe Emery’s track record of developing young attacking players makes Birmingham an ideal environment for the Argentine to rediscover the form that made him one of Europe’s brightest prospects during his time at Manchester United.
Chelsea, meanwhile, will be hoping Garnacho thrives under Emery, as his permanent transfer would become more valuable if he enjoys a successful campaign at Villa Park.
