Real Madrid have completed one of the biggest transfers in football history after agreeing a deal worth up to £120 million to sign RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande.
The 19-year-old Ivory Coast international has signed a seven-year contract that will keep him at the Santiago Bernabeu until 2033, becoming one of Jose Mourinho’s marquee arrivals ahead of the new season.
The Spanish giants had seen an opening offer worth around £85.4 million (€100m) rejected earlier in the transfer window before returning with an improved package that convinced Leipzig to sell one of Europe’s brightest young talents.
Diomande was one of the most coveted players on the market after an outstanding breakthrough season in Germany.
Having joined RB Leipzig from Leganes for around €20 million just last year, the teenager enjoyed a sensational campaign, scoring 12 goals and providing nine assists to help Leipzig secure Champions League qualification. His performances also earned him international recognition with Ivory Coast at the FIFA World Cup.
Real Madrid faced fierce competition for his signature.
Liverpool explored a deal but were unwilling to match Leipzig’s valuation, while Arsenal and Manchester City also tracked the winger throughout the summer. Paris Saint-Germain had been regarded as the favourites at one stage after agreeing personal terms with the player, but the French champions eventually withdrew from negotiations, describing the transfer fee and wage demands as excessive.
Mourinho’s influence proved decisive.
The Real Madrid manager identified Diomande as one of his priority signings and persuaded the club to break its transfer record to secure the highly rated attacker, who is widely regarded as one of the most exciting young forwards in world football.
The signing continues an ambitious summer rebuild at the Bernabeu.
Diomande joins Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konate, Denzel Dumfries and Marc Cucurella as Mourinho reshapes his squad following his return to Madrid.
Diomande’s rise has been nothing short of remarkable.
Just over a year ago, he had made only a handful of senior appearances for Leganes after progressing through the club’s youth ranks. Since then, his explosive pace, dribbling ability and fearless attacking style have transformed him into one of Europe’s most valuable young players.
Real Madrid now hope the teenager can develop into the next Galactico as they look to reclaim both the La Liga and UEFA Champions League titles.
