Aston Villa have publicly confirmed their pursuit of Joao Palhinha, with talks under way with Bayern Munich over bringing the Portugal international back to the Premier League.
Villa director of football operations Damian Vidagany has revealed negotiations are taking place, although he stressed that the two clubs have not yet reached an agreement.
Speaking to German publication Bild, Vidagany said:
“We are in talks, but there is currently no agreement.”
He also emphasised Villa’s strong relationship with Bayern, adding:
“If something should happen, it is always on the basis of the great respect we feel for FC Bayern.”
Vidagany highlighted Villa’s positive relationship with Bayern sporting executives Max Eberl and Christoph Freund before declining to discuss the negotiations in greater detail.
The structure of any transfer could prove to be the main obstacle.
Villa are interested in a deal for the 31-year-old midfielder, but Bayern are understood to prefer a permanent transfer rather than another loan. Reports suggest Villa would favour a short-term arrangement, potentially creating a gap between the clubs that must be resolved.
Palhinha spent last season on loan at Tottenham Hotspur after struggling to establish himself as a regular at Bayern following his move from Fulham in 2024.
His spell in north London provided him with another season of Premier League football, making him an attractive option for Villa as they seek to reinforce their midfield before the transfer window closes.
The Portuguese defensive midfielder previously established himself as one of the Premier League’s leading ball-winners during two seasons at Fulham before Bayern signed him in 2024.
Villa’s interest has now progressed beyond preliminary enquiries, but Vidagany’s comments make clear that significant work remains before a transfer can be completed.
Bayern’s preference for a sale could ultimately determine whether negotiations advance, with the German champions looking for a permanent solution to Palhinha’s future.
For Villa, however, the confirmation from a senior club official leaves little doubt that Palhinha is firmly on their summer transfer agenda.
